Island Acres, the eastern anchor of James M. Robb Colorado River State Park, located just east of Palisade provides a choice of full hook-up, electric hook-up or walk-in tent camping. Showers and laundry facilities are available spring through fall. James M. Robb Colorado River State Park is actually five diverse sections along the Colorado River as it flows through the Grand Junction area. All sites are available on the reservation based system. Camping is also available at the Fruita Section 30 miles to the west. Nestled along the Colorado River in Debeque Canyon, Island Acres offers opportunities for walking, biking, fishing and swimming. The surrounding canyon walls offer a spectacular backdrop and maybe even a glimpse of wild horses or Big Horn Sheep. There are three fishing lakes, only two of which are stocked. A fourth lake, designated as the Swimming Hole, is surrounded by a sandy beach. Area attractions include the Grand Mesa, Colorado National Monument, museums, wineries and orchards. If you do not arrive to the park within 24 hours of your scheduled check in time and do not notify the park that you will be arriving late, your site may be resold and may not be available when you arrive. The fees for any nights passed are non-refundable.  
  
**Changes and Cancellations**
- Cancellations or changes may be made online 24 hours a day 7 days a week, or through the Aspira Call Center at 1-800-244-5613.
- Reservations where one or more dates fall outside of the 6-month booking window are frozen for 14 days.
- Cancellations:
  - If the cancellation is made 28 days or more prior to the arrival date, 25% of the fee for 1 night or day-use permit will be retained
  - If the cancellation is made 8-27 days prior to the arrival date, 50% of the fee for 1 night or day-use permit will be retained.
  - If the cancellation is made 7 days or less prior to the arrival date, 100% of the fee for 1 night or day-use permit will be retained.
  - If a reservation is cancelled at any time after the arrival date, any nights prior to the cancellation are NON-REFUNDABLE 
- Changes:
  - If a change in the reservation is made 28 days or more prior to the arrival date, 10% of the fee for one night or day-use permit will be retained.
  - If a change in the reservation is made 8-27 days prior to the arrival date, 15% of the fee for one night or day-use permit will be retained.
  - If a change in the reservation is made 7 days or less prior to arrival, 20% of the fee for one night or day-use permit will be retained.
  - If the change in the reservation dates is made between the day after the arrival date and the departure date, the fees for any nights or days passed are NON-REFUNDABLE.
  - There is no additional fee to add days to a reservation.
  - The reservation holder is responsible for any difference in use fees.
- Customers who wish to receive a refund outside of these rules will need to contact the park at which they have the reservation directly.
- No exceptions to the refund policy will be given for bugs, bad weather, campfire bans, water conditions (including water levels, boat ramp or swim beach closures, and algae)!

The Best Camping Near Grand Junction, Colorado

Stayed the weekend of May 29, 2015.  The surroundings of the canyon walls are absolutely stunning.  And the Bald Eagle that lived nearby and flew over the campground daily was Awesome!  However, the highway is very noisy all day and night and can be seen clearly from most campsites.  The Train (just as close) was actually a nice touch when camping with todddlers (they love Choo Choos).  Also the camp sites are a little packed in (close together).

Beautiful Surroundings - But Noisy

Overall this is a nice peaceful park. There is a set of train tracks across the river and trains go through quite frequently but it's not terribly loud. The site was spacious and we had a nice spot to pop our tents under a big tree. We had a nice picnic table and a fire ring along with a grill. Although there is a level one fire restriction, you can have a fire in a fire ring no taller then two feet. There are six sites for just tents. A parking area and walk over. The bathrooms closest to us were very clean and flush. They had pay showers. There is a nice swim beach that allows only swimming. It has natural cool and warm pockets. The sand gets super hot in the heat of the day. Staff was friendly and the campground was clean. We definitely would return.

**Campground Review:** I've stayed at Island Acres a few times, three times in the last months. All three times have been different. I wanted to do a secondary review for this particular trip. We arrived mid day on a Friday and there were plenty tent sites remaining. There are only six in the whole campground that are tent only sites. We originally were assigned to number 38, which is a more desirable site, we were excited. It is shaded and back in a corner along the river. But when we arrived to our site, there was a park ranger that asked us to change to site 36 because he had a sprinkler project he wanted to finish. While we had the right to say no, we disappointedly took site 36, which has little to no shade. It has two small trees that provide minimal shade during the heat of the day. This particular weekend hit high 90's. He also informed us at the move that they forgot to give us our card back when we registered.

So we went about our trip and set up camp late in the day and there were still no other tents there. This weekend, however, was a much busier weekend then most of the others we have stayed. Therefor, more people and more chaos. One site came in and set up around 1:30 am, with air mattresses and lights shining. The site on the other side of us left around 1:30 am. So again, a lot of light shining in our tents. Beyond that, there were also people that set up outside of standard sites, which I've never seen before. They were parked in the grass and in no parking zones, which a ranger came and corrected, early in the morning on Saturday. The swimming pond was refreshing for 5-10 minutes this time of year but then you wanted to come out for a half hour or so to warm up again. We purchased a shade tent, which came in handy at the beach and our site. That evening, the crowd returned and there was a lot of really bright lights again. People coming and going super late and camping in non-designated sites. People camping in their cars with huge tarps over them in the parking lot.

We also could hear a lot of highway traffic, which we hadn't noticed in previous visits. It is a very busy highway so traffic was heard all night long. The tent sites are on the farthest side of the campground from the highway so if the noise is loud for us, it is likely loud throughout the campground.

**Product Review:** As a Ranger for The Dyrt, I get products to test from time to time - today I am testing [The Campfire Cutting Set](https://primus.us/products/campfire-cutting-set) from Primus. The campfire cutting set is so lightweight and compact. It's easily packed along for any trip. It's made out of a nice oak that is appealing to look at and extremely functional. The knife cuts like butter. The video is cutting a raw potato and it does it with ease. Cleanup was a breeze as well. So, out of the box, it contains a chef knife (extremely sharp!) and an oak cutting board, all wrapped up in a nice prep mat that is great for packing your campfire cutting set. We loved the convenience and practicality of this set!

Ranger Review: Primus Campfire Cutting Set at Island Acres - James M. Robb - Colorado River State Park, CO

The confusing thing was there are a few campgrounds in the area with the name James M Robb. We stayed at the James M Robb Campground a few miles east of Palisade, Co.

We stayed in the C loop. The campground was in great shape and was well maintained. If you are seeking off the grid camping this is likely not the place for you. We had full hookups (water, sewer, power). The area had nice views with the Colorado River running along the side of the campground. We did some hiking on trails above Palisade and spent time at the wineries, cideries, breweries, and distilleries in Palisade and Grand Junction.

I would stay here again.

We liked the setting and the campground was nice and clean. However sites were very close together and the tent sites were on top of each other. We were asked to move our site for a new camper at like 9 am even though check out was around 12\. Other than that we liked the campground there is a nice playground a wonderful fishing pond and a swimming hole. There are showers however they are $1 for 4 minutes so bring your change.

This place was really smelly when we stayed. Fire was real close as well. The road is noisy. Did not enjoy

Right by the road and river

It is very convenient as it is right off I-70\. Very pretty with the cliffs behind it and a little pond on the property. The pond is stocked with fish.

Even by the highway, it is fairly quiet. The sites are well spaced. It could use a few more tent spots, but hookups for rv's are plentiful.

We love this state park for fun little getaways. The fishing lakes, swimming lake and playground are all fun aspects my family enjoys.

The campground was fine, not great. Highway noise 24/7 and although our site was "on the river" there was an embankment which blocked the view. 

  

There was a pretty fast current—I wish we had brought tubes and life vests so that we could have enjoyed the water. It was way too fast for our paddle boards.

  

The highlight of the campground was the steep cliff on the other side of the river. We quickly realized that two Bald Eagles were sharing a nest up high, and we enjoyed watching them while we were there.

The staff are outstanding and polite... but cheap ass Colorado could spread some of there super high gas tax and pot revenue on this cute little place... For Shame Colorado politicians... well done state employees that make due with marginal support ... the river is too far for camp views, not bad if you’re tired.

Good for quick overnight 

The camp sites are comfortable enough, but being a literal stones throw from an Interstate makes it feel like a commercial campground.  It's a bit run down and there is a nearby burn (not the parks fault) making it a bit second tier as far as Colorado State Parks go.  I have been to the Fruita location of James Robb as well which is a much better destination, but if you have to stay here a night, bring a tube and a couple beverages.  Float the Colorado River, and be a good citizen.  I picked up more trash here than any other park I've attended so far in my 30+ years.

It's a one nighter when you are passing through.

We stayed in a full RV hookup site for 2 nights (power, water &amp; sewer). Typical State Park with little privacy but there is a great trail along the river that we rode bikes and ran along. The main building has coin showers in the bathrooms and as well a little coin op laundry. The bathrooms closer to the sites are vault toilets but seen to be kept fairly clean.

Nice campground, except some noise from highway. The tent sites are not free unless it is off season you may be able to get away with it. I stealth camped here in a parking spot and paid for a day pass.

Wonderful view of being inside a canyon. Chance to see bighorns running up the canyon walls. Good ATT signal being right on interstate.. but it’s right on the interstate lol. Convenient but you can hear it. Doesn’t bother me when sleeping but it may you. Nice trail along river. Easy access to the river for dogs. Swimming hole for people only. Few stock ponds they call lakes.

My wife and I like this campground.  Its mostly open close sites, but it was quiet clean and well kept.  The views are nice and there are a few waling paths around the campground.  Showers and bathrooms were clean and well maintained.  It is about a 20 to 25 minute drive to Colorado National Monument which is the reason we chose this campground.  We would stay at this state park again if in this area.

Simple Quiet Campground

Stopping here on our way from Ouray CO to Casper WY.  Clean, grassy campround along the Colorado River.  We have seen one river otter and many birds in the trees.  Hosts and Rangers are ever present, which is a good thing.

The freeway is right next door so bring ear plugs or run a fan

Anothe great James Robb Campground

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site C58 for 2 days in mid June. The temperatures were in the mid 100’s in the area and the CG only has 30 amp service, so we could only run one of our AC units during the daytime without popping the circuit breaker. The ambient heat probably contributed to the breaker popping. The sites are nice and fairly well spaced, typical of SP CGs. There is a daily entrance fee of$9/vehicle in addition to the CG fee, so factor that in. There is a nice trail along the river too. AT&amp;T coverage was good, with 3-4 Bars of LTE service and speeds up to about 8 MB/s. Our site had a clear view of the Southern sky, so we were able to get DISH coverage on all three western satellites at our site. There are about 30 wineries in the Grand Junction, Clinton&amp; Palisade area. Two of the three we visited, TWP and Colorado Vintners Collective, had some very nice offerings.

This spot sits right on the Colorado river and by train tracks. Occasionally, you will see a train go by but it's not too loud and not too often. The spot were were in was not cleaned sro there were piles of ants eating leftover food. Besides that it's a very nice location with plenty to see. There's a small hike path along the river and there's also a permanent mounted telescope so you can spot some Bighorn sheep on the mountain. There's an area to fish and some people were enjoying kyaking on the pond. It's about 22 minutes from Walmart, Sam's club and across the street there's a gas station.

Stopped by for lunch. It’s next to the Colorado River. Nice lunch spots with water and picnic tables. Lots of room for RV’s to maneuver. A little playground and swimming pond too.

It’s also very open and hot. Some big cottonwoods provide relief.

Great rugged mountain vista from the banks of Colorado river

We have stayed at this State Park years ago and love it. You do get lots of road noise as it’s right off I-70, but all the pluses make up for that! Level spaces with fire pits, post BBQ grill, picnic tables. The spaces that don’t have tall enough trees have covers over their picnic tables. There’s grass between spaces and they are nice large spaces. There’s a small lake for fishing and appears to be open for swimming in the summer. You have a choice of full hookups or electric only. There’s an RV dump on site. There’s restrooms scattered throughout. And I didn’t notice it advertised but there are a couple of washers and dryers. There are a couple of nice handicap spaces as well. It is more expensive than most state parks we have stayed at. $37 plus a $9/day vehicle fee for full hookup site.

Beautiful setting

We stayed here for almost a week in the beginning of October. The campground itself was nice with the only detracting factor being the highway next door. There was a fatal crash on the highway one night we were there and the traffic was backed up till late at night/ early morning. 

  

The park itself is situated nicely in a canyon, which when the sun rises the light bounces off the cliffs and gives a dazzling sight. We came to the area for (mainly) one reason- The Colorado National Monument. We ended up loving that we could take advantage of Grand Junctions amenities (shopping, car maintenance, even replacing our RV furniture!) 

  

The site itself was a pull through which is always a nice addition to a campsite. They have laundry services for a fair price, though only 4 machines (2 wash, 2 dry).

Off I70, plenty of campsites if you're making a road trip to the national parks in Utah.  A nice stay to gear up and rest from a long day of driving.  Nice trail along the Colorado River.  Showers and sheltered picnic tables at pull through, electrical campsites.  Privacy if staying during the winter months (only ones here).

This is a beautiful state park, but it's next to I-70.  The higher number sites are very close to the road.

Good facilities, and warm showers, playground, fishing, etc.  All around beautiful place

Headed East and used this campground as a stop over.  Tent sites at $22 were booked wound up with electric at $36.  A bit pricey but hopefully the showers will make up for it.

Even the official State Park description mentions highway and train noise. But the landscape is wonderful. Watching the sunlight play out on the canyon walls sold me. I’ll be back again. Probably wouldn’t spend a lot of time here but as an easy stop for a night, directly off of I70, it’s a winner. 

Great Views

Water turned off at the end of October. Pit toilets are available and clean. Able to reserve day of visit, but the website is a bit wonky. 5g Verizon.  Nice river walk. Yellow leaves on the trees still in November. Only the loop b open right now. About 10 other campers. The highway /train noise is minimal inside a camper.  There is a playground and covered picnic tables. Very close to Palisade farm land. I'd camp here again. Not too many dispersed options close by.

Clean campsite that is conveniently located near I70. Canyons surrounding the campsite are pretty. Train and traffic noise at campground but not unbearable.

Great spot for overnight stay

Stayed in site 5 Loop A which is right on the river. Could hear and see trains going by occasionally on the other side of river. Sites are pretty well spaced out and have a good shade structure over the picnic table. Lots of flying bugs and it was hot in early July. Have electric hookups but still quite warm. Flush toilets were okay, nothing special. Also have to buy a CO Park Pass, so thats another $10 on top of the reservation fee. 

  

Food aside: Ate Kikkoman teriyaki rice noodles and Kalua pork, yum!!

Overnight stay. Nice park park like setting with all the necessary amenities. Very flat concrete site with picnic table and canopy, fire ring, and gravel sitting area. 30 amp electric and water worked great. Excellent Verizon service as well. Nice view of distant mountains. We did occasionally hear a train in the distance, but it did not affect our sleep. Would stay again.

Spacious State Park

Beautiful spot, a little noisy due to hwy. Our camp spot had melted candy on concrete and rangers had no way to wash. They did scrape it off the concrete pad. Otherwise nice, clean and spacious. No real hiking or biking at location. But river and ponds are nice.

Nice level spot to park. The noise from the nearby freeway isn't too objectionable. I like the cover for the picnic table. 

The bathrooms are a little dirty and there are tons of bugs here. 

Otherwise it was good and I'd stay here again.

Very nicely groomed campground level site. 2 fishing ponds plus the river a swimming hole also . Nice views of the book cliffs. How ever we were so close to the interstate the noise was horrible . If I was to come back here I definitely would not stay in loop D maybe 100 yards from interstate on other side of fence/tree line . If it was not for the that the park would be an awesome one

Great little campground off of I-70. Fishing swimming and plenty of walking. While the campground doesn't have a store on site there is a gas station less than a mile away. Would come again! They have no hookups, electric only and full hookups. Great service with Tmobile. Enough open space for starlink as well.

Nice campground if you are on the road and need an overnight stay. Negative is you are right off the I-70 on one side and train tracks on the other. 

James M Robb Island acres 

This is a beautiful location right on the Colorado river. My girlfriend and I decided it would be a beautiful place to camp and we were only 20 feet from the river. There was a beautiful cliff on the other side of the river. There was a beautiful cliff behind us. Unfortunately, we discovered that we were about 100 feet from a railroad track on the other side of the river. Trains went by all night every half hour or so. On the back side was I-70. Semi trucks went by all night long. In the middle of the night we had jets flying directly overhead.
Being as we were between two cliffs, we were sleeping in a giant echo chamber. It was, without a doubt, the loudest campground I have ever been in. If you want a good night’s sleep, I would suggest you find a campsite elsewhere.
