Brown Mountain Rd ( Flynt Overlook)

High-clearance vehicles navigate the bumpy Brown Mountain Road to reach this dispersed camping spot at an elevated overlook. The site provides ample space for turnarounds and setup while staying clear of road traffic. One reviewer noted the area gets chilly at night with brisk morning breezes, and wildlife sightings include moose in the evening hours.

Abandoned mining equipment scattered around the area adds historical context to the mountain setting. The overlook position offers expansive views, though 4x4 capability is recommended for the road conditions. Campers often discover this location after finding more popular spots like Ironton Park Dispersed too crowded, making it a viable backup option for dispersed camping in the San Juan Mountains.

Amazing overlook

Originally we were going to camp at Ironton Park Dispersed but it was very crowded already. We decided to venture further up the mountain via Brown Mountain Rd. When you think you have gone far enough, keep going. Its a little bumpy and 4x4 is definitely recommended but totally worth it. You'll come to a huge overlook with plenty of room to turn around, set up camp, and still be out of the way of others using the rd. It does get chilly at night and there was a very brisk breeze in the morning so plan accordingly. My husband even spotted a young moose right before the sun went down. Old abandoned mining equipment ads some extra vibes too. Don't know if the place has an actual name or not but we've decided to call it Flynt Overlook.
