Access to Pine Canyon Campground requires a valid military I.D., which keeps visitor numbers low and the site largely uncrowded. Set on Vandenberg Space Force Base outside Lompoc, the campground has hiking trails and fishing lakes nearby, with hunting permitted during select seasons. Amenities are minimal: a few port-a-potties and picnic tables, no trash cans on site. A campfire permit is required even though fires are allowed. Watch for poison oak off-trail, and pack out all waste.

Use the Lompoc gate onto Vandenberg AFB, traveling on Pine Canyon Rd. .3 miles past the gate, on the North side of the road is a large turnout, with a hidden road. Take this road down the hill for another .3 miles. Stay to the left at this Y in the road and go another .7 miles. Again, stay to the left at this Y and go another .3 miles to the campground. There is a self check-in box.
