Hikers heading into the Ventana Wilderness along the Carmel River Trail will find Bluff Camp as the first trail camp past the Los Padres Dam trailhead. The route is generally easy to follow but involves frequent river crossings, roughly 50 over an out-and-back trip. No water, no restrooms. Campers should carry a filter, pack out all trash, and check current fire restrictions before heading in. Poison oak is present along the trail. Those planning a multi-night itinerary can check campsites near Carmel Valley Village or continue deeper into the wilderness to Carmel River Backcountry Camp, located 0.6 miles southeast along the same trail.
