Big Pine Dispersed Camping

No permit is typically required for dispersed camping at Big Pine. This area follows standard Forest Service dispersed camping regulations. However, always check current regulations before your trip as requirements can change seasonally, especially during high fire danger periods. While camping is free, remember to practice Leave No Trace principles by packing out all trash and respecting fire restrictions when in effect.

Big Pine dispersed camping is located along a creek just south of Big Pine Campground near Old Station, California. It's positioned in proximity to Lassen Volcanic National Park, making it a convenient base for exploring the area. The camping area is accessible via road, though Twin Pines Road can be somewhat narrow for larger vehicles. The dispersed sites are spread out along the creek, offering privacy and natural surroundings in a beautiful forested setting.

Fishing is excellent in the creek running through the camping area, with campers regularly catching trout. The creek also provides a peaceful soundtrack for relaxation and wading. Hiking opportunities abound in the surrounding forest and nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park. Wildlife watching and bird spotting are popular given the natural setting. Stargazing is spectacular due to minimal light pollution, though tree cover may limit some viewing. The area also serves as a great base for exploring scenic drives and viewpoints in the vicinity.

Big Pine dispersed camping is primitive with no direct amenities at the sites. Campers will find natural fire pits at some locations and creek access. For services, the Old Station Visitor Information Center located just north offers water, trash disposal, and an RV dump station (note that the RV sewer dump typically closes in mid-October). There is no cell service at the camping area, and Starlink connectivity is limited due to tree coverage. The sites themselves are spacious with room for various sized RVs and travel trailers, featuring good separation between camping spots for privacy.
