The Painted Desert Ranger Cabin is a backcountry, off grid cabin built by Ranger Ross in 2011. Ranger Ross lived in the cabin while he worked as a resource protection ranger at the Petrified Forest National Park until 2015 when he transferred to the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. Ranger Ross now allows backcountry hikers to enjoy the cabin by renting it out by the night or the week.

The ranger cabin is a rustic off grid cabin that offers almost no amenities. There is no concierge, room service, or continental breakfast. There is no linen service or fancy little bottles of shampoo. It does however, offer beautiful views of the Painted Dessert wilderness, quiet serenity, and amazing star gazing opportunities. All from the comfort of a cozy one room cabin with a queen size bed and a flush toilet.

The ranger cabin sits on the boarder of the north wilderness area of the Petrified Forest National Park. There are great hiking and exploration opportunities right out the back door of the cabin. For more information visit the park's website.

    Clean, Patriotic, Friendly

Called day of and was able to reserve a 30AMP spot with full hook ups $39. As other reviews mentioned it is exceptionally clean, there is pride in ownership and America with a life size carved memorial to the armed services. Great play area for kids, giant chess and a pool (closed due to Covid). They were selling homemade pie and pulled pork sandwiches at check in also which was a fun surprise. A few cute log cabins to rent also. All gravel and not a lot of trees, no view but a clean and safe overnight for sure!

Decent Overnight Stop On Our Way To Albuquerque

We stayed just one night while driving from Page, Arizona to Albuquerque. Friendly staff and visitors.

We were able to get pizza delivered to our RV site which was a big hit with the kids.

    Spider Rock Campground

Rough but Serviceable Campground in a Spectacular Location

I visited Spider Rock and met the proprietor Howard Smith 20 years ago. He is still there maintaining this spacious campground on his own. It is rough around the edges but you will be very close to the rim of the canyon and within a short drive of amazing access points via car and foot. The campground has no amenities and is covered with a layer of fine red dust, but we did just fine in our 17-foot Casita RV. Call before you go to find out about limitations as the Navajo Nation has been hard hit by Covid. Don't miss the hike down into the canyon to see the White House (named after the large cliff dwelling ruin cut into white rock). The canyon is breathtaking: red cliffs surround lush-looking pastures cared for by Navajo inhabitants but off limits unless you access via Lighthouse Trail, which offers limited access to the canyon floor, or arrange a guided tour.

    Not reaaly good...

    Must have a small trailer.

We have a 28' 5th wheel and after looking at the potential spots, had to back our way out. There is no way to turn around. If camping here, I would have had to back my way into a spot. Scenic views a short drive or hike away but not an easy place to camp.

    Nice Rustic Campground

We trully enjoyed our stay. Close to the sights. The campground is a little rough along the edges but the sites are great. There is a great hiking trail that starts at the campground and goes to the canyon. Howard the owner is very friendly and a wealth of information.

    Great Cottonwood trees

Beautiful grove of trees. Maintenance people apparently not allowed to clean up bugs in bathrooms. Floodlights at night a bit bright.

    Great little spot

We needed a stop for our little crew and this place was perfect! Drive through spots, little play ground for kids and little decor that made it nice. We had a large tree and picnic table so we didn’t have to unload our table. All in all I would stay again for sure.

    Dirt Sites with Some Amenities

Not much here to write home about, but this park does offer a small, enclosed dog park, pool, a small grocery in their office building, and a “cookout” concession stand like you would find at a theme park or stadium. Their stage was being used to display a patriotic homage to the US military. No pets allowed in the amenities area. Room for improvement would be adding trees and cactus appropriate to this climate to beautify the park, because it’s pretty barren. Staff did not wear masks indoors during the rising Covid pandemic.

    Great Experience

Called late to get a reservation and we were able to do over the phone. Very helpful and friendly. Perfect for a night pit stop, clean bathrooms and showers - great pressure and hot water. Hookups and wi fi was great. Would stop by again if we were in the area.

Great big rig safe location on route 40

Added to favorites will be stopping here when traveling route 40 across country.

We have learned to avoid KOA’s with our cyclone 4270 (44’ triple axel 5th wheel), all seemed to have been laid out with camper sizes of the 60’s and 70’s.

USA RV PARK is sized and laid out for modern rigs. We reserved a large rig sight to be safe but I did see other cyclones in standard pull through spots that I would have been comfortable using.

USA RV PARK is clean and quiet with the one exception of being on airport flight path. Flights were not that often but are load if your outside or have doors open. We were not bothered while inside or sleeping.

One point to be aware of when planning to stay at USA RV PARK is that map apps seem to have the location wrong when coming from the east. The park acknowledged this is an issue when coming from east and said to use exit 16 and follow signs not the map apps.

Dropped pin at entrance and copied gps location

    Great Overnight Spot

This was a great stay to break up our drive home! While the local area is not the nice you won’t really need to leave the campground once there. Kids loved the activities. Very little room in between sites but this is built for overnight interstate traffic. Facilities and staff were great. BBQ dinner and ice cream social excellent!

    10/10

My husband and I were skeptical to stay at such an uber patriotic site on stolen land, (we are NOT AT ALL the target audience) but it exceed expectations at every turn. Truly a 10/10 experience from staff, to sites to amenities.

We only stayed the night, but there was so much to take advantage I was almost disappointed we didn’t stay longer.

Huge pool, large chess game, community dinners (no vegetarian/ vegan options) ice cream socials, camp store, etc.

Nice bathrooms, didn’t use laundry. WiFi and ATT& Verizon worked at site. Gravel sites needed leveling with full hook ups. Picnic table came with site.

    Good for a quick stay!

Gallup definitely isn't exactly a desirable destination (hot and dusty!), so I wouldn't go out of my way to stay here. But for a quick overnight stop with good amenities - I'd definitely stay here again with our 42' fifth wheel. ALL pull-thru sites. Our site was super unlevel, which caused setup of our fifth wheel to error over and over when leveling. But our blocks finally fixed it. Dog pee reeked of pee, but that's to be expected. Nice pool and BBQ cookout.

    Nice RV Park

    Clean and tidy.

Had to stop and check in but the park overall was nice and lovely. Close to shops and gas stations and conveniently near the interstate.

Lots were a bit close together but we were able to squeeze in.

    Excellent Campground with Unexpected Amenities

When driving through Gallup, one doesn't expect to find such a great place to land on Route 66. On the surface it may appear to be a great over-nighter location - which it is! Level pull-through sites with a picnic table.  But it's so much more than that. First the business seems to be comprised of  family-owned and operated. They have excellent amenities including a lovely pool and playground area. Their shop is absolutely GREAT. The laundry area, showers, dish-washing area and other services are excellent.  Sites include electric, water and a picnic table. A dump station is positioned right by the exit. We had an unexpected delay for four days due to a medical situation, and they recommended a doctor who helped immensely, and they worked with us day to day to keep us in our spot as needed. Highly recommend this RV Park! Great folks!
