Dispersed camping enthusiasts can access multiple sites along Forest Road 246, which cuts through mixed forest and open terrain within the Kaibab National Forest. The US Forest Service maintains this free camping area where visitors can bring pets, enjoy campfires, and consume alcohol while choosing from both drive-in and walk-in options.
Sites scattered throughout the forested sections provide natural windbreaks, while open areas offer more space for larger groups. The road provides reasonable access to most spots, though conditions vary seasonally. For campers planning extended stays in northern Arizona or exploring campgrounds near Jacob Lake, this dispersed area works well as a budget-friendly base camp.
Description
The vast majority of all three ranger districts of the Kaibab National Forest is open to dispersed camping unless specifically restricted for reasons such as proximity to developed campgrounds or other natural or cultural resource concerns. Dispersed camping is the term used for camping anywhere in the National Forest outside of a developed campground. If you plan to disperse camp on the Kaibab National Forest, please review our Dispersed Camping Guidelines and Restrictions.
