Description

Delta State Recreational Site is a popular campground for those traveling between Tok and Fairbanks. This campground gives visitors a wilderness feel, but keeps them conveniently close to town for events or shopping. There are stores, commercial showers and other services nearby. Delta State Recreation Site has 25 developed campsites, a picnic area, a covered picnic shelter, water and toilets.

A city airstrip next to the site allows for fly-in camping.

Directly across the highway from the recreation site lies the Delta River. This allows for some spectacular views of the Alaska Range beyond. On a clear day one of the tallest mountains of the Alaska Range, Mt. Hayes with an elevation of 13,832 feet, can be viewed from the park. Because of their high elevation, Mt. Hayes and five other mountains, that can be seen from the park, remain snow covered year round.

Site Size Limits Worth Knowing

We originally planned to stay at Delta State Recreation Area on a first-come, first-served basis after reading several online reviews suggesting that a 40’ RV could fit into some of the sites. After scouting the campground in person, we decided not to chance it and instead stayed at Big Delta State Historical Park nearby. That said, we wanted to share our impressions to help fellow campers make an informed decision. In our opinion, Delta State Recreation Area is not suitable for 40' fifth wheels—primarily for two reasons: 1: Narrow roads with tight turns where overhanging tree branches could easily scrape your rig. 2: Short, narrow sites that don’t provide enough swing room for a 62’ truck and trailer combo. There may be a couple of sites that could fit a rig up to 35’, but even those had branch clearance concerns. Some of the longer-looking sites are actually“buddy” sites labeled A and B, which are meant to be shared and aren’t ideal for big rigs. This campground is best suited for smaller setups—Class B and C motorhomes, small travel trailers, and tent campers. Tent sites looked inviting, and the area has a quiet, wooded charm. There are vault toilets and a camp host cabin onsite, though it appeared unoccupied during our late June visit.

Nice little stop over

Right outside Delta Junction this campground has a great day use area with multiple picnic tables and grills. A small picnic pavillion also adds to the day use appeal. Quiet sites with enough separation of peace and privacy. Firewood for sale $8 a bundle or 2 for $16. Close too all the Delta history and a great little stop off campground.
