Across Highway 14 from the Columbia River Gorge, Upper Campground sits in the forested hills of Beacon Rock State Park, roughly a mile from the basalt monolith that gives the park its name. The campground runs about 28 sites in a looped layout, most tucked under tree cover with varying degrees of privacy between them. No cell service reaches the upper sites. That detail alone shapes the experience here.
Sites range considerably in size and seclusion. Some are split-level, with parking above and the tent area a few steps down. A shared trail through the middle of the camp connects sites to the restrooms and a community water spigot, which means the bathrooms require a short walk or drive depending on where you land. Reviewers consistently describe the facilities as clean. Campers with large rigs should note that the sites run small, and the layout does not accommodate RVs well. Weekdays and early-season visits tend to see far fewer neighbors, while summer weekends fill quickly given the limited number of spots.
Hiking is the main draw. Trails leave directly from camp, ranging from a short quarter-mile loop to an eight-mile circuit around Hamilton Mountain with open sightlines toward Beacon Rock and the Gorge. Kenny notes "access to several good hiking trails right out of camp." One trail leads to a waterfall with a swimming hole. Hikers should watch for poison oak on later-season routes. The Woodard Creek Campground — Beacon Rock State Park Campground and Beacon Rock State Park Group Site — Beacon Rock State Park share the park grounds for those needing different configurations, and campgrounds around Beacon Rock State Park extend options further into the Gorge corridor. Reservations are available, and securing a site in advance is worth the effort.
Description
The upper campground has 28 standard campsites. It is an older camp in a forested setting suited more for tents than RVs. There are a limited number of sites that accommodate RVs over 20 feet. This campground closes seasonally.
