Lumber River State Park's Princess Ann campground sits directly on the banks of the Lumber River in Robeson County, giving campers a choice of boat-in, hike-in, or drive-in access depending on which site they book. The campground is small, and a handful of sites sit close enough together that neighbors are visible, though visitors have occasionally arrived to find the entire campground to themselves. Rangers confirm that low-occupancy nights are not unusual here.
Two sites, PA 7 and PA 8, sit at the river's edge across from the Naked Landing trail and require a short walk from the parking lot rather than direct vehicle access. The Lumber River is fishable and navigable by small watercraft, and the swimming is viable in warmer months, though the riverbed is soft underfoot. Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer connections are available, and each site has its own trash can with daily ranger collection. A vault toilet sits near the parking lot, with a full restroom facility across the way.
After dark, the campground has a reputation for clear skies and loud owls. Courtney B. describes being "awoken at dawn by a cacophony of juvenile barred owls directly above us," so light sleepers may want to plan accordingly. Rates run $17 to $47 per night, reservations are available, and pets are welcome. Campers looking for places to camp around Lumber River State Park will find this one of the more river-accessible options in the area. If the Lumber River's mix of water access and full hookups fits your itinerary, Princess Ann is worth a night on the calendar.
