Big Rock Campground near Washburn, WI, is surrounded by forested terrain with Lake Superior nearby. Temperatures range from lows in the 20s Fahrenheit during winter to highs in the 70s during summer. Campers can explore the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Chequamegon National Forest, both offering various outdoor activities.

Located on the Sioux River, a Class A steelhead trout stream, the park offers a spot for picnicking, wildlife viewing, hiking, bank and stream fishing, and primitive camping. Camping is on a first come, first served basis only.

The Best Camping Near Washburn, Wisconsin

Beautifully wooded and  tucked-away county campground near Ashland, right on a beautiful trout stream. Campsites are wooded and spacious... but a bit weary from use; at least, it seemed recent campers had left a lot of litter behind. Although this is in a beautiful setting with decent campsites, and not  far fromAshland for day trips, a concern for me was a notice up about frequent car break-ins and campsite vandalism there. We ended up not staying here because no one else was at any if the campsites and we wondered about security. Might be a good spot if you wanted to come as a group, though!

Stayed here for 3 nights over the summer when every other campsite in the surrounding area was full. Original plan was to stay in northern Minnesota but everything was taken. This ended up being a pretty great setup when we had our first spot. The only drawbacks were that some people seemed to be staying for extended periods and if you leave your campsite for any period of time it can be reclaimed. Even if you have paid. We lost our spot when we went into town and scrambled to find another. Close enough to Apostle Islands and other hiking. There’s a great water source in Ashland next to the lake. We would fill our jugs here.

Not the Worst

Found this backside campground when everything else was full. Great location on a river and was there when no one else was. Stayed two nights and moved to a site further into the woods the second night. Great, secluded spot to stay while exploring the areas many hiking opportunities.
