Many people enjoy the solitude and primitive experience of camping away from developed campgrounds and other campers. "Dispersed camping" is the term used for camping anywhere in the National Forest outside of a designated campground, and is generally allowed anywhere unless posted otherwise. Many people drive out on Forest Service roads into the woods and find spots that meet the needs for their camp.

Dispersed camping may mean no toilet facilities or treated water are located nearby. Typically, dispersed camping is not allowed near developed recreation areas such as campgrounds, picnic areas or trailheads. Some dispersed sites are provided with fire rings and in those cases please use them as they are designating that area as the spot to safely have a campfire. Finally some dispersed sites have a designated footprint for use. If you see a site with any type of barriers or fencing please respect these areas by not pulling motor vehicles or OHV’s around them. They are there to preserve the surrounding forest making it enjoyable for all for years to come. 

Regulations

Follow these general guidelines to help ensure these dispersed camping areas will be enjoyed by future generations of campers:

Camping is limited to 14 days. The campsite must then be moved a minimum of ten miles. Camping is restricted to 28 days in any 60-day period.

All dispersed campers should follow the ideals of Leave No Trace and practice the concept of Pack It In - Pack It Out.

The Motor Vehicle Use Map only allows for motorized vehicles to be parked 150 feet off of any authorized forest service road.

Dispersed camping is prohibited in areas such as developed trailheads and picnic sites.

Choose sites that are already established.

Find camping spots that allow for water to shed naturally. Digging ditches around tents or trailers is not permitted.

Dispose of human waste properly (200 feet from water, in an 8 inch deep hole).

Please do not carve or chop into tree trunks—this can eventually kill the tree

Castle Valley

The Best Camping Near Castle Valley, Utah

Without 4WD, there are less dispersed camping spots in Moab compared to the past. Many popular spots are now charging fees. This one remains free and is located just south of the city. You have to drive on this road until you see the signs allowing camping. From there, there are many pull offs. We chose one of the first ones we found as it was cold and dark when we were looking. Not much privacy, but easy to find! I read that the farther you go down the road, the more private walk in spaces you’ll be able to find. Even though it was snowy when we were there, the view was gorgeous! There was a fire pit set up at the site, and we were able to find restrooms/showers in town early morning at Dowd Flats RV Park on our way back into Moab. 

Convenient to Moab 

We visited Moab and went up this road looking for a place to camp. You drive up pretty high into the mountains and go past where the location marker is for a while.

  

There are sites here and there, but I wouldn't say there are a ton. There are also SO many cows and because of that, there can be lots of poop everywhere. The area must be open range ranching or something.

Site was easy to get to. We had very little traffic while staying here and no one in sight. Felt very remote yet only a 20 minute drive to Arches NP. Amazing view of the La Sal mountains and awesome sunset. 

La Sal Loop

I recently ventured to the La Sal Loop Road Dispersed Camping site and was truly rewarded for the initial challenge of the steep incline and sharp turn at the beginning of the road. The panoramic vistas of Moab valley and the La Sal Mountain range were absolutely breathtaking, especially since the site is perched above the winter snow line. It's a spacious, open area with a dirt base, bathed in sunlight which is great for those with solar setups. While there's little in the way of privacy, the views more than make up for it. I got a solid AT&amp;T 4G signal, but Verizon users might find connectivity limited to voice only. Perfect for a short, sunny getaway!
