Flight Park State Recreation Area

Flight Park State Recreation Area, near Salt Lake City, Utah, is a unique spot that caters to those who enjoy a bit of adventure. This location is popular for its stunning views and proximity to hang gliding activities, making it a great choice for thrill-seekers.

The area offers a mix of camping options, including spots for tents and RVs, though it’s important to note that the winds can be quite strong, which some visitors found challenging. As one camper mentioned, “It can get extremely windy at night,” so be prepared to stake down your tent well. The flat, open ground provides a decent space for camping, but the wind can make it tricky to set up.

While there are no amenities like drinking water or showers, the views of the surrounding landscape are a highlight. Campers have noted the beauty of the area, with sights of the mountains and the valley below. If you’re lucky, you might catch some paragliders taking off, adding a bit of excitement to your stay.

If you’re looking for a last-minute place to crash, this location is a solid option, especially if you don’t mind the wind and the lack of facilities. Just keep in mind that it’s not a typical campground experience, but rather a spot for those who appreciate the raw beauty of nature and a bit of adventure.

Super hard to find in dark

Girlfriend and I stayed here and we went at night. Very hard to find. We aren’t sure if we camped in the right spot. When we woke up there were paragliders ready to glide. Which was cool. VERY windy and hard to drive stakes in also. But it did work and it was free

No free or dispersed camping

The flight park offers decent views for the proximity to the city. However, the only allowed camping is in the marked spots near the restrooms at the top of the hill. Camping is $15 a night to stay on a large gravel road. The camping is flat and works with a tent, but it is also very windy and hard to drive stakes in the ground. Past the marked camping spots there is signage for a 14 day limit, but according to a park ranger this is not a dispersed camping area.

Decent place near SLC

Pulling up we were a bit confused as there were paid sites near the bathroom. It appears that anything beyond that is dispersed. Easy access for big rigs with just a couple stretches of gravel road.

Nice level ground, wide open space. It can get extremely windy at night, but that was to be expected. There is an excavation site next to the hill that runs throughout the night. It adds a bit of light and noise, but it wasn't terrible.

Pretty solid for a night

This place is up pretty high with mine, town, and mountain views. The camping is free and dispersed and there are lots of RVs up there. There weren't many other tents probably because it was so windy. The location is where paragliders take off from which I'd imagine is pretty cool to watch but it definitely creates more noise. It's a great place if you're in the area and looking for a last minute free place to crash. Stake down your tent if you have one though. The road is fine all the way there and there are just a few bumps when you get up.
