The Best Camping Near Hanksville, Utah

This is a great spot to pitch your tent! This area is quite popular and located just past the Goblin Valley State Park line along Little Wild Horse Road. There are likely over 50 camp sites tucked inside the formations that make up a large hillside on the backside of the state park. There are great views looking across the desert to the San Rafael Reef.

The campsites are identified by a rock fire pit. The ground is level and the sites are separated by the unusual rock formations very similar to those seen within Goblin Valley for probably a mile down the road.

Make sure to bring firewood, there isn't anything to gather. There are no trees. Pack it in pack it out rules apply. If you need to use the bathroom follow common rules, dig a hole, and don't poo in the campsites.

Fantastic Primitve Camping 

The swell is beautiful and has miles and miles of open BLM to camp in! 
Boondock your trailer and you’ll have the place to yourself! 
Great for ATVs, stargazing, hiking and solitude. 
Must do spring or fall- summer is too hot. 
Stream is fun to tube and play in. 
BLM has no facilities- pack in pack out.

This area has incredible campsites dispersed all over! Our campsite was close to others but far enough away to really feel secluded. Driving in or hike in if your car isn’t four wheel drive equipped. Great spots for climbing, hiking and river swimming. Wedge Overlook is a short drive away and an incredible view! Always worth it!

Incredible Spot for Desert Camping 

This is a great place to wander primitive unspoiled deserts! Nearby there is commiting trad and sport climbs as well as difficult canyoneering routes. In the badlands south of the San Rafael Swell and near the campgrounds are pieces of petrified wood and agate strewn about. Nearby is the fantastic Goblin Valley state Park where we did the Lair of the Basilisk Canyoneering route. These are primitive sites with no amenities so bring lots of water! The closest towns are Green River and Hanksville

Great free base camp for the area!

We found a nice spot for 4 trailers and a few tents. The weather did get winding but the temperature stayed moderate. My kids had a blast hiking in goblins valley. It was nice to visit as place where kids can run and climb without restrictions. Will visit again.

Campground Review:
I have stayed at this camping area many times,it’s one of my favorite areas to visit and explore! I camped here over Memorial Day weekend 2019. We were camped down the first spur that is on the east side of the wash. This dirt road goes quite a way along this bluff. There are many options for camping in the nooks and crannies down this first turn past the state park line. If you continue down the little wild horse road, there are just as many options along that road up to the next fence line.  Camping is first come first serve and it is a popular destination so get there early for the good digs!   There are no amenities here, pack it in pack it out to help keep this area clean and healthy! 
While visiting this time we did some canyoneering. We rappelled into Goblin’s Lair in GVSP. It is a 95 foot rappel into a large cavern, it’s very fun! This was my first time rappelling with my dog! There is a full service campground inside the state park and they did have fire wood for sale at the visitor center. Make sure you bring wood if you intend to have a fire, there is nothing to gather here.  Day 2 we did Ding and Dang Canyons, this is a moderate canyons with some deep water and class 5 climbing maneuvers. You should have experience canyoneering if you choose this route. Park at Little Wild Horse parking lot ( where the pavements) or take your 4x4 down the wash another mile and a half to Ding/Dang parking area. Cool area to explore and camp.  I didn’t see any spiders this trip, but in the past I have seen the biggest spider of my life camping here. ( on my tent to boot!) We saw a lot of beetles and lizards!

This is a great product! I’ve used a variety of different sporks for camping and this is by far my favorite! It’s so long! They do offer a shorter size, but I recommend grabbing the long spork!  It has a squeegee/spatula type coating around the soon end so you can really scrape your bowl clean! Means more food in your belly and less clean up after! Win win! The other end has a fork/knife. The knife will cut things like hot dogs, but I wouldn’t force it to do much more than that. It is the perfect utensils for eating directly out of the camping Mountain House meal pouch! 


Morsel Spork at Dispersed Camping -San Rafael Swell

We really enjoyed our site tucked in the canyon. It is one of my favorite camp sites I have ever visited. There were many places to explore and climb around, and we took our chairs and drinks into one of the crevasse “rooms” where it was nice and cool to hang out. Our spot was the second dirt road on the left of Wild Horse road after the state park boundary, and it curved back into a little private canyon. People camped in the nearby spots but we couldn’t see or hear them unless we went looking. My wife wasn’t a fan of the bats at night, but I thought they were great.

  

Our Explorer got stuck on a rock, but that was my own dumb mistake. All the rock faces in the cliff face watched us work to get it free.

Fantastic private canyons

Check the weather before you go! Our first night the area was quite busy, but most people packed up and left on a Saturday morning. Unusual. Then the wind began, and it ripped up our camp mat, tossed over the kitchen table and rocked us until we cried uncle and left a day later. Gorgeous place. No cell service. 

Free sandblasting

This was by far our favorite family camping experience ever. We found a great space tucked into the cliffs the provide privacy, space for the kids to explore and play for hours on end, and enough space that we could spread out our camp. 
We did do Valley of the Goblins and Little Wild Horse Slot canyon, but there was enough right at camp to explore that we would have been fine if we just stayed there the whole time. Don't get me wrong, both of those places are amazing and worth visiting, I am just saying camping by the cliffs was also very fun. 
This will definitely be somewhere we go again. 
To get there first follow all the signs for Goblin Valley, before you get to the visitor center turn right following the sign to wild horse canyon. About a mile down that road a sign will let you know you have left the state park limits. On your left as you go down the road you will spots to turn off the road. Those will take you by the cliffs where there are tons of spots. We took the second turn off. 
We had a blast!

Amazing!

Lots of campsites, but there were more campers around during a summer weekend than I preferred. 

Surprisingly crowded

This place is amazing. The sky is as dark as I’ve ever seen it and the dispersed camping is as if you were on another planet. Great slot canyon hikes near by.  

Top 3 favorite places to camp

Awesome find, definitely better than the "people pastures" along mt temple road.  Lots of cool camp spots along the cliffs, not a lot of places to dig holes to do your business so bring a way to pack it out.  Great place for kids to play and doggies to run around.   Super close to Goblin Valley State Park and Little Wild Horse slot canyon. 

Gorgeous, camp here!

Went during Memorial Day weekend 2021 and was not busy. If you continue going down Wild Horse Road, you can certainly find a secluded spot to park your RV or setup your tent. Traveling on Wild Horse Rd. from Goblin Valley Road is paved and pretty easy to navigate. If you're looking for that "je ne sais quoi" spot, then you'll have to drive (or hike) off the dirt trails off of Wild Horse Rd. It was well worth it. The rock formations provide a secluded and "out of this world" experience. I have a 24' travel trailer and the off road section is bumpy, but if you take your time, you can certainly do it. So much to see and do. Goblin Valley is literally next door. Definitely will be back.

Great Dispersed Camping!

We loved this site! There are a lot of little canyon trails to explore for all ages! Super close to both Goblin Valley and Little Wildhorse Canyon! Highly recommend the Little Wild Horse Canyon / Bell Canyon hike. Bring lots of water and make sure your pets stay hydrated as well! Went over Memorial Day weekend 2021 and it was not as busy as I expected it to be!

Awesome spot with lots to explore!

Beautiful, unique, dog-friendly (in Spring temps), and so much to do! We left wanting more, always a great feeling.

The best

It can get pretty windy here, and with all the dust, it can make cleaning up your camping supplies difficult. Additionally, the wind makes campfires...difficult to say the least. 

There is no water or wood to be collected here-- bring plenty of water. If you want to purchase firewood, there's a gas station in Huntington that sells it for a reasonable price.

 On the less windy days, it's a great location for disc golf, corn hole, or a game of catch. 

The road to some of the deeper campsites can be rough, but our Ford Fiesta made it, so you probably can too.

Be sure to check the forecast! It occasionally rains here, and when it does, it turns the whole area into a terrible, muddy affair (your vehicle will likely have a hard time leaving).

All in all: great views, easy entrance, lots of wind and dust. 

Great Desert Camping

While we hit this area during a period of torturous wind, it was still an excellent zone for dispersed camping. Driving in wild horse road from Goblin Valley state park we considered one of the more barren (but still beautiful) spots to the left along the cliffs but then settled in a cottonwood grove along the road past the Ding Dang trailhead. 

Great access to slot canyon hikes and so much to explore. Will return.

LOTS of options

Found a super cool little nook towards the very end of the goblin looking rocks. Really fun hiking up the little slot canyons. Quite a few open spots to camp. Road back in was well maintained and rocks were lined up on the sides of the road to easily see where to drive

Beautiful views of the mountains across the way 

There are three (3) signed areas designated as Goblin Valley St Park dispersed camping area. This is the third one you see on left heading to little Wildhorse TH.  Roads seem rough, could be muddy if wet?, but RVs and TTs seem to get out there. No services, no cell signal. 

This area used to be BLM, but goblin valley st park has gobbled it up. See map pic with areas in red as new additions to the at park.

Goblin valley dispersed 

Sweet, low-key spot adjacent rocks. Please bring a toilet system, as we were saddened to notice several TPs dotting the area. Road in is fine, just a bit bumpy due to rutting from driving during mud season.
