Beautiful Sunset

A beautiful camping area. It was very clean with many camping spots. It is popular however, and there was only one spot left, but it fit our trailer perfectly. It was quiet here except for the howling wind. We were treated to the most beautiful sunset and the twinkling city lights afterwards.

Several sites off the main trail

This is the second time I have used this location. Very quiet. Mostly enclosed trailers and a few tents. I arrived Saturday evening and picking were slim. Found a spot to backup my truck and spend the night. Full moon lit up the area, no lantern needed. Would stay here again.

Sierra Vista Trailhead

BLM managed area . Drive to the trailhead has about four areas set up for camping. Plus room for more at the cul-de-sac at the end. Vlose to great hiking in the Organ Pipe NM and close to all facilities in Las Cruces. Very quiet location.

Nice spot for Big Rigs

This site has 6 solitary spots away from other campers and 1 large spot for 5 or 6 campers. The large spot can get kind of crowded so get there early if you want a spot away from other campers. The road is well maintained until you pass the large camping area. After that there is one last solitary spot until the road gets rough. There are more campsites further on, but you need 4x4 and a high clearance.

Overall the area is nice. Pack in pack out. Seems like a lot of RVs and trailers stay here. There was noise from generators throughout the night. If you are tent camping, I'd recommend Balyor Spur Dispersed about a mile or 2 away.

Beautiful Spot not too far from town

This spot was beautiful, right down the mountains. It wasn’t too far from Las Cruces at all. The sites are well maintained and the sights were great. We did run into some light pollution from the surrounding cities, but the stars were still beautiful.

Nice area, not as dispersed as most

We came in at night and made the mistake of venturing past the designated camp spots. If you decide to do that PROCEED WITH CAUTION. You’d be fine with 4x4, but we had a van and got stuck in the loose gravel. As long as you don’t venture past the designated spots you’ll be fine. The area was nice and clean, but the spots were generally pretty close for dispersed camping. Our neighbors were very nice and helped us get unstuck with the winch on their jeep.

Good boondocking

Few other people there. They drove on past our spot and almost out of sight. Isolated, quiet, some light pollution from Mesquite and Las Cruses.

Great area with pretty views and safe feel

The pull out is easy to find day or night with a number of spots for tents, RVs, trailers, and cars. As a tent and car camper I like to feel safe wherever I stay the night and this made me feel just that. There were plenty of other campers, not too far out of town yet still isolated! It’s a great area just outside of las cruces and about 40 minutes from White Sands!

Not our favorite 👎🏼

I know there are a lot of excellent reviews of this place but it honestly just wasn’t our favorite. It’s close to the road, busy, tiny and not very dispersed at all. This area is a short dirt road that is roped off on either side, it has about 4 designated sites and then two gravel lots. The road is in good condition up to the gravel lots and then gets pretty hairy for a short section. If you have 4WD I would keep going and there are several more less maintained sites further on that looked nice! There is a port a potty here too if you don’t have your own bathroom. All and all this space makes for a fine stop over, the Organ Mt views are beautiful, but just not the spread out, dispersed camping vibe that appeals to us!

Super BLM camping

Yes, BLM got it right at the Sierra Vista Trailhead. Clean, safe, beautiful views of the Organ mts and Las Cruses, great trails close by.
Limited spots and could be more difficult for rvs. Great for vans.

Hike and bike

Wanted to explore Las Crusas, and this is just 9 miles from town. The “roped” is BLM area in nice enough, pull outs, but not much room to maneuver. Big rigs beware- we were able to just turn around as there were quite a few vehicles. Past the trail head the road continues but is pretty bad. Needs to be fixed. 4x4 no problem, and there are some great sites just up the road (Rocky). If the road wasn’t washed out- it would be great additional 5/6 more sites with room to park a big rig.

Gorgeous and Easy Access Dispersed Camping

Came across this spot by accident when driving to Dripping Springs Visitors Center. There was a sign visible from the road stating dispersed camping (BLM) and the Sierra Vista trailhead.

Quite a few spots with fire rings (maybe 10) not too far from the road. The views are gorgeous, yet it’s close to the city and amenities. Luckily we got here early, since it really filled up around sunset. Vans, tents, and RVs all fit.

Popular camping spot

There are at least 15 campers at this site on a Fri night in December 2021 a week before xmas. This makes for a safe feeling. I am a tent camper and entered camp area at 10:30pm. Paved roads all the way to turnoff to area. Room for maybe 5-10 more vehicles. Might at times be full if a late arrival.

Pitched my tent next to car and slept thru the night with no noise. Light wind this night. Some movement from others by 7am.

Nice views in the morning up to the adjacent mountains, and down toward Las Cruces.

Overall an excellent place to crash for the night.

Groomed space, awesome views!

This is a dispersed camping space so there aren’t bathrooms. The views of the mountain ridge as the sun comes up is awesome. The stars from here are pretty great too! There are a couple pull off sites in a groomed road that leads to a trailhead. There was a little bit of traffic around 3 am and you could hear coyotes at night. You get a bit of nighttime wind as a heads up for tent campers. You have to go slightly past where goggle maps tells you to reach the coordinates provided.

We arrived after dark. The road was easily accessible for a car. The site was cleared and ready for a tent. Las Cruces city glow is visible in the distance at night. The stars were out. We heard coyotes at some point in the night. The morning brought a brilliant sunrise over the mountains in the distance.

Great Sunset Views

I found this spot here on The Dyrt as I was just passing through Las Cruces.

It was only about 10 minutes out of town and was easy to find. There were several larger RVs there when I first pulled in, so I was slightly concerned about finding space.

But the road that continues from the first turnaround is only accessible to 4x4 vehicles, so there were fewer folks on the other side of the canyon.

I picked one of the first two spots on the left, but the road kept going and there were several other vehicles camped further up the road.

Enjoyed an epic sunset and great stargazing!

awesome & fabulous

We really loved this place. Beautiful setting, hiking trails all over, there are people around but you feel like you have your own space, and of course free.  Very quiet.

Easy access from road for larger vehicles. There are pullouts as you are driving in for your own space. However, it gets crowded and spaces are taken quickly. Beautiful area, Organ Mountains to the east and city lights of Las Cruces to the west.

Good Verizon and AT&T reception.

This location is convenient enough to go back into town for things you need. We went to Holiday World RV (which I highly recommend) to get a repair done and returned to the area. We were lucky enough to get our same spot back. Feels like a campground, other campers friendly and respectful of normal noise restrictions you’d get at an actual campground. Good place to stay if you are planning on going to White Sands.   BLM ranger stopped by about once per day to check on things, which was nice.  Really beautiful sunset.

Other Useful Info:

Dry camping only

No water

FREE-no fee - BLM

Good hiking/mountain bike area  - lots of day hikers & bikers come in for the day so be mindful of not taking up parking spaces when looking for a place to camp.

Easy to find, very busy

Stayed: 10/9/2020- FREE

Vehicle: Hyundai Rogue

Equipment: Tent

Coming from Las Cruces, this is the first of 3 dispersed areas along Dripping Springs and Baylor Canyon roads. We stayed on a Friday night and were worried we wouldn’t find a spot. Every site was taken along the way until the trailhead. We decided to squeeze in and just sleep in the car, instead of risking our luck with the next two areas.

Easy to find, even in the dark. Nice views of the mountains and a trail right there, if you wanted to do some walking or biking.

This was fine for a quick, one-night stay. I’d prefer to have one of the actual sites and be able to pitch the tent if we were staying any longer. Too close to our neighbors for my liking, but in a pinch, it was a great spot!
