Good Dispersed Camping Spot
Lots of big pull offs for dispersed camping. There is also a decommissioned forest service campsite on the north side about halfway in with tables and fire rings still. Creek was a bit high but not bad.
Great dispersed spot
Beautiful view overlooking the valley. This spot was about 4 miles down Hermosa Park Rd. Full of wildlife, Bear, elk, fox and the marmot highway. Very busy on a Friday-Sunday. Arrive early to find a spot.
Great remote campsite
Nice remote site stayed for two nights in mid june, make sure to download maps before you go as there is no cell service, road is doable for all cars
Beautiful camping outside Purgatory
We camped lower than the pin, at the campsites by the Hermosa Creek TH. There are 4-5 campsites here and no creek crossings involved. We were here early June for 3 nights and the creeks were high, questionable to cross with 2wd but fine for 4wd. The first creek crossing on Hermosa Park Rd isn't until 1.75 miles after the TH area, and there are plenty of awesome spots before that. The road is well maintained and there are signs at all road junctions to keep you on the right track. If you camp by the creek there is catch and release fishing for cutthroat trout, lots of people there fishing during the day. Hermosa Creek Tr is awesome for biking/hiking/running too. Download maps before you get here as there is no cell service

Dreamy spot
Incredible views of the ski run. Only gripe, careful of mice! We had a little critter somehow hop into the truck overnight. Be smart with your trash and food.
Perfect little trees for hammock. Little bit of road traffic but not all night.
Nice and quiet
This is a great area to camp. I was there at the end of August on a week night. There was a little vehicle traffic on the road but at night it is quiet. The sites very from very large, like the one pictured below, to small and tight. Almost all are directly on a creek. Bugs are around but not too bad. One thing to be aware of- most of the area is an open grazing area for cattle. Cows=poop. Lots of it...... I would definitely return though.
Big campground, free and beautiful
Beautiful campground. Easy to access with great views along the way. Not to far from trailhead, blooming wild flowers in July and right near the stream.
Gorgeous secluded camping area
Dispersed camping, no amenities, but beautiful location. Little streams running nearby, wildlife viewing, the drive up the slope is beautiful as well
Very far from town - but very beautiful and peaceful!
There are a lot of dipsersed camping spots all along Hermosa Park Rd north of Durango. Some are even an hour drive (4WD) from town. These spots are far from one another so you feel like you have the mountain to yourself! Good water flow as well if you need it. I wouldn't recommend it if you plan to visit waterfalls and other attractions in Durango since it is such a drive. Definitely stay more than a couple nights!
