Lower Piedra Campground
About
National Forest
The Lower Piedra Campground is just north of U.S. Highway 160 on the west side of the Piedra River, about 18 miles east of Bayfield and 25 miles west of Pagosa Springs. It is about a half mile up Forest Rd. 621 on the west side of the river (not to be confused with the First Fork Road [Forest Rd. 622] on the east side of the river). The campground offers 17 large, level sites with plenty of shade. Fishing opportunities are available. NOTICE: Dispersed camping is not allowed within 100 yards of either side of Forest Road 621 leading to the Lower Piedra Campground (from the cattle guard to the camp-ground boundary).

Nice campsite, close to the road but but remote enough.
Campsite was nice and was easy to get to. We only stayed one night as we were just passing through to Rocky Mountian National Park. Next to the piedra river which was nice, didn’t have a Colorado fishing license at the time so not sure how the fishing was, water looked pretty high. We didn’t have any cell service in the area so if you need that be aware. We would return here, close to Durango and pagosa springs.
Dispersed sites
There’s a small crystal clear pond along the road up to the campsites. There’s also a rushing river that flows along one side of the campground. Price is $22 a night, self serve station.
Love this place!
This is one of my favorite campgrounds. In a short hike you can set up camp surrounded by pines along the river. There is also a natural hot springs.
