The Best Camping Near McClellan Creek National Grassland, Texas

This campground was on a large recreation area that included some ATV trails, which was pretty cool! There were several different camping areas that you could choose from: the right side was used mostly by ATV riders, the left along the lake was nearly full, then there were some sites away from the lake in the trees. I chose to stay in the trees, because it had pull through sites, was shaded, and it was more secluded.

At first, it was hard to find the bathroom and fee drop off point: they are located at the campsites to the right that the ATV riders use. The showers are NICE! They even have hot water. It was really nice to get a warm shower.

I was camping in my SylvanSport GO and discovered that right next to the wheels is an excellent sport to place gear. The beds overhang there and keeps tubs mostly dry! Also, I found out that it is pretty nice to turn the trailer around before setting up, that way the door is facing the car. It makes it more convenient for short trips back and forth.

Busy spots and quiet spots

Lake McClellan Campground is a nice campground in the middle of the Texas panhandle. Signs on the interstate direct you to the exit, but after that don't expect any other signage to help you find the campground, the only other sign you will get is the National Grasslands sign when you reach the area. Use your GPS or Google Maps to find you way and you will not have any trouble. After entering the Grassland do not take the first entrance you see on the left(dirt road leading to East Bluff#1 campground), but take the second paved entrance. Neither have a sign. The road is paved all the way to the campground. Once you turn off the main road their will be a road to the right which leads to the dump station. Just past this is a fork in the road with a sign for Lake McClellan. Take the road to the right for Lake McClellan Campground, going to the left will take you to McDowell Campground. Pay station will be on your left as you drive in, continue past the pay station to the camping area.

The campground has hook up sites with electric and water($15), and non-hookup sites($10). The first 8 sites are just a large parking area for RVs, the remainder of the sites sit on small loops in the trees. All sites are nice and level. A few sites are missing their site numbers which made it a little difficult to figure out which site we were in. Campground has flush toilets with hot showers, one of the two restroom/shower building was locked. Site could use a little upkeep but for$10 for a sight with flushing toilets and showers, this is a good deal. Only a few other campers mid week in October. This are has ATV trails, so I am guessing it might get busy on the weekends. All sites have picnic tables, metal fire rings and most have pedestal grills as well.

Nice quiet campground 

We were on a cross country road trip and selected this campsite based on the reviews. The area is very nice and quiet, and as previous reviews stated impossible to find without GPS. We were disappointed that the bathrooms and showers were closed until (I guess) the pandemic is over. It would have been useful to have this information from the Forest Service website.

COVID-19 changes

Some sites are close together, we had to move so we could get more privacy. It’s an honor pay system. $5.00-$15.00 depending on site. Bath house is single use only(has large lock).  Very peaceful and remote feeling. 

Not bad for the price

We’ll kept campground with lots of sites. It cost us $11.50 with our Lifetime Senior Pass with water and electric. Pull through sites. Dump station as you exit.

Grass has been mowed and is a nice brown color.

Great Spot

I stayed here during a red flag warning and the wind wasn’t too bad. I had the water/electric hookup section all to myself with the camp host nearby. The bathrooms could’ve used a cleaning and I think the primitive camp sites only had pit toilets.
It provided a lovely break from the road and added a little extra landscape to the usual Texas drive. That being said I wouldn’t exactly call this a lake campground for the time being.

A Peaceful Warm Night

Did have RV hookups. The lake is dried so don't expect a lake. Did see lots of fireflies :)

Okay..

We are traveling in a 27ft Class C motorhome, we booked site #15 which was a pull though. With a 'American the Beautiful Pass' we only had to pay $10 a night for water and electric hook-ups. Surprised to see other campers here, there are also 2 hiking trails that are in the grasslands. Coming from the city the smell of rain, sounds of nature and being able to watch the sunrise gets an A++

5G & Not enough shade

There are three different camping units to the park. Dry camping on one side of the dry lake. Two sections for camping on the other side of the lake RV section for OHV traffic. And then a tent RV section on the other side. Only one full bathroom with showers the rest are pet toilets. The upper campground is quite charming you need to know the lake is dry though and has been for quite a while.

I think it depends on where you choose to stay

This campground is maintained and there’s a host present. Fees are reasonable (10$ for no water/electric), it’s quiet, and we would definitely sleep here again. 

Good Sleeping Spot

Easy to access and quiet. Lake is dried up but lots of ATV trails. 15$ with full hook up or 10$ with no hook up. Couple hiking trails also listed on the AllTrails app. Fire pit and picnic tables at campsite

Camping areas were very nice, even the hook up areas, was very disappointed in the port a potties and the other bathrooms with showers, they were filthy and trash was full…. Other than that we had a great time.. 😊
