Stillwell's Store and RV Park is located just north of Big Bend National Park, about 8 miles from the Persimmon Gap entrance. ****NOT LOCATED IN ANY TOWN, WE ARE 45 MILES SOUTH OF MARATHON**** The old-fashioned general store carries soft drinks, beer, ice, canned goods and regular gasoline. Our RV park features sites with full 30/50 amp hook-ups (electric, water and sewer), water and electric only sites, dry sites and tent sites. Stillwell is a practical campground with a lot of history, not a resort. Come enjoy the peace and quiet at Stillwell while exploring the nearby Big Bend National Park and Black Gap Wildlife Management Area. Given our ideal location, this is the perfect spot for stargazers, bird watchers and those just wanting to unplug for a bit. We do have limited WiFi at the store. The nearest cell phone service is about 15 miles away in BBNP. If technology is your top concern, this likely isn't the place for you.

Stillwell Store & RV Park

There are a number of campgrounds associated with Big Bend. Some are run by the park, and one is an RV park operated by a resort. The busy season here is actually November to April, where campsites will be harder to come by. Make sure to reserve your campground ahead of time, especially during peak season. The best camping near Big Bend is in the park itself, as Texas has little BLM land to make use of. Study Butte, TX, and the surrounding areas offer some accommodations if you can't get a spot in the park.

The Best Camping Near Big Bend National Park, Texas

RV and tent camping. We are bikepackers and had no problem finding a great site to pitch our tent. The showers are currently closed due to covid, but there are restrooms and laundry. The camp store has snacks and basic needs and is open til 7. 

Quiet and beautiful 

Great place to stay if you want to get away from it all. Be prepared for slow internet an NO Cell Signal at all. We stayed on the full hookup side of the road. The other side has better views but I don’t believe there are any sewer connections. It’s a short drive to the park entrance and not terribly far from Marathon. 

The perfect choice for “just outside the park”

When we first tried to book our Xmas week Big Bend trip, all campgrounds inside the park were full. We found this on The Dyrt and figured we would stay a night or two and get a spot at the Rio Grande Village inside Big Bend, which is the only full hook up place inside the national park (FYI RGV is phone reservations only and usually has spots open).

  

We were surprised at how much we enjoyed staying at the Stillwell Ranch RV Park and ended up staying a full week for only $150 with electric and water hookups.

  

There are 3 sections to this campground. The full hookup sites, which we had originally booked, are up by the store and are fairly cramped with limited views. However, the Electric &amp; Water only hookups across the street offer much better views and even though the campground is set up as a gravel parking lot to pack people in, it was Xmas and we were one of 8 campers. Lots of space. We had the "end" spot so the views were pretty epic. 

  

The 3rd area is a ranch road with some pull offs for boon docking or tent camping and are even more "dispersed." 

  

There are two cons: First, the dust. Which I'm fairly certain you would find camping anywhere in the desert. Especially near the once volcanic Big Bend. Coming from the the Atlantic Coast, the insanely arid dusty air was a new experience. But we loved it. And it made for amazing sunrises, sunsets and star gazing. 

  

The second con for us was the water pressure. Maybe 10-12 PSI at best. It is well water and even with a high-end filter, even the water tasted "dusty."

  

We set up an outdoor shower tent next to our camper and were able to camp for an entire week without needing to dump since we did all showers outside.

  

The store it self is small, and has a a few things that are pricey, but much cheaper than driving an hour north to Marathon to find a grocery. So come well prepped with food and bev. Big Bend is HUGE and you want to minimize store visits.

  

Stillwell does have gasoline available, but only 87 Octane. No propane (bring extra tanks if you have a propane fire pit like we do).

  

The laundry room was clean and only $1.25 per load. Their campground showers/ bath house is a bit outdated. While you can use the bathrooms, their showers are currently closed due to COVID.

  

Overall, only 8 miles to Big Bend's north entrance, and then another 3 miles to the first trail head "Dog Canyon," it's a great place to stay when compared to the other options which we checked them all out:

  

\- RV Campgrounds near West Entrance: The little town of Study Butte/ Terlingua does offer small grocery store and several RV parks. But the campgrounds here are all asphalt parking lots and you are packed in. And even though you have bigger mountains in your view, you also have the dusty less than amazing views of all this small town. Powerlines everywhere and lots of noise.

  

\- Inside Big Bend - First, we went to Rio Grande RV Village... it's a small asphalt parking lot. You are packed in and when we went through, the entire place smelt like sewage. So happy we avoided this one.   
  
Chisos Basin is an epic spot, BUT, like many national parks you are stacked on top of your neighbors. While I feel confident we could have safely pulled our 23' travel trailer down the winding roads, there are only a handful of spots in the basin campground big enough for a camper. Would have loved the views and close proximity to trails, but we prefer a more secluded feeling and Stillwell gave us just that...even though we had to drive more.

  

Cottonwood Campground down by the St. Elena Gap is nice too, but again, you're packed in there.

  

Overall, very happy with our choice at Stillwell and would stay there again in the E/W only spots.

BIG SURPRISE: Best alternative outside Big Bend

Extremely close to the entrance to Big Bend Park. (6 miles)
Full and partial service available.  Some sundries available in their store (ice, drinks, beer, snacks). WIFi is a very welcome addition, since Verizon cell service is ZERO bars.  They have a good sized DVD collection available for viewing while you stay.  The gal behind the desk (Payton, I think) was very very helpful.  Definitely a place worth staying at while you explore Big Bend

Since National Park campgrounds were closed or full this campground was a good alternative. It’s a wide open desert campground just a few miles from the park entry.

Great camping spot. Cell service limited at campsites but the store has WiFi. Bathrooms and showers were also available, and a washing room for dishware/etc. 
it does get pretty hot at night too (at the end of May).

Hot and dry

Proximity to Big Bend National Park keeps this place in business.  It does have electric and water hookups, but overall the place is dirty and dumpy.  Poor wifi near the store only, not at the campsites.  If they had any competition, they'd fold.  The gal working the sad little store was friendly, at least.

Good Location, Crummy Place

The countryside in this part of Texas is not lush. The dark skies are astounding and the Stilwell folks seem serious about protecting them. We were there New Years Eve and it was pretty quiet. Everything worked, price was fair- it was an interesting place and the owners’ handouts show a wry sense of humor. I liked the place!

Close to Big Bend, nice folks  

Campground has all the basics. We are here in off season so not much activity.  Our goal was to visit big bend national park and this is the nearest park we could find. It is about 9 miles to the park entrance.  

All sites are dirt, but connections are good. Wifi is good.  No cell service.  We don't use park showers,  so no idea what they are like. 

Over all it fills the bill.

Remote location 

Fair number of sites for every kind of travel - RV, trailers, vans, tents. 

Wifi was very poor. Best you could do were some texts and email while sitting at the store. No cell access at the RV site. 

Bathrooms were very limited (3 toilets, 2 showers for men and women). Desperately need to updated and they got a lot of use while we were there.

Ok place to access Big Bend

I love visiting Big Bend for the remoteness and the beauty of the desert. Stillwell is the only place I will stay while in the area. It's located on the Northern end of the park and is isolated from the touristy Terlingua. Full hookup sites are very close together (almost touching) however I prefer the electric only sites as they are spread out for the most part. 

Favorite park

While we were here there were a few other campers. We had one end to ourselves. We tried to camp inside of Big Bend but it was full. After checking out the camp grounds inside the park we were so happy that we stayed at Stilwell. The showers here are nice, the toilets are nice. The store is well stocked. They have gas,ice, lots of things one expects. Inside the park not much.

Desert camping 

This is the only RV campground I could find on the north side of Big Bend NP and I would stay here again.  And as I'm used to staying in many campgrounds located near highways and significant city traffic, Stillwell is completely opposite -- totally quiet &amp; dark &amp; pleasant!  On our drive to the park one day, we saw a sizable family of javelinas crossing the road!

  

The website is very clear that there is no cellular and very limited wifi (basically just at the store, although my wife's phone seemed a lot for successful at finding and holding the network from our place at the far end of the full-hookups lot.  There are zero trees and I saw a couple Starlink receivers so I presume they've got full connectivity!

  

The FHU sites are very narrow.  Each post has connections for two sites, so you and your neighbor pull in from opposite directions (assuming you both need driver-side hookups.)  This is shown clearly on the site map, so no surprise there.  But, we have a 42" deep slide and, even with just 6-8" clearance from the post, the adjacent site (on the curb side) with a similar slide would likely result in a single narrow shared path between the two rigs.  Said another way, if I had to guess, I say there's only about 32' between posts to fit two rigs.

  

Our site, at least where we stopped in the long space, was significantly unlevel, both side-to-side and front-to-back, although we tried a few stopping points.  The sewer connections are raised high above the surface, resulting in limited actual draining of your tanks even when using the common tapered hose guides we all use (i.e. significant waste will remain in the line.)  Plan some extra time and care to dump and rinse your line.   

  

As I said, I would definitely come here again, but just be prepared for this campground's less-than-ideal quirks.  And enjoy the peace &amp; quiet!

Full hookups at north end of Big Bend is key!

we stay at Stillwell Store RV park often.  if we are needing wi-fi to work we stay up by the store.  if not, we like to stay across the road. lots of space, clean air and area to walk the pup.. we have never had a bad experience here.

The cell info is probably incorrect since there is zero service unless you connect to their WiFi or have Starlink. It’s wide open here. Windy a lot. Warmer than closest weather forecast location. People are very nice. 

Great place to escape 

We absolutely loved it. It was there four days. We loved being able to access the desert. Just exploring the area. With Big Bend literally on the other side of the mountain an easy 8 mile drive to Big Bend national Park. So far this is number one on my list of places I’ve seen and Ben and I’ve been a lot of places.
