Gorge Campground is located near Sisters, Oregon, within the [Deschutes National Forest](https://thedyrt.com/camping/oregon/near/deschutes-national-forest). The area features forested terrain with nearby rivers and trails. Temperatures range from lows in the 30s Fahrenheit during winter to highs in the 80s in summer, and visitors can explore attractions like the Metolius River and the scenic McKenzie Pass.

 Gorge Campground is part of a chain of campgrounds one right after another that dot the upper portion of the Metolius River.
## Recreation

 Hiking and fishing top the list of recreational activities for visitors. For anglers, the spring-fed Metolius river offers a stunning setting for fly-fishing. The clear, cold water supports rainbow trout, whitefish, bull trout and kokanee salmon. For day hikers and backpackers, the area offers a wide variety of scenic terrain, ranging from riverside trails to routes in subalpine forests.
## Natural Features

 The headwaters of the adjacent Metolius River are at Metolius Springs at the base of Black Butte, a 3,076-foot cinder cone. The clear, cold river flows north from the springs through diverse coniferous forest and a landscape of volcanic activity. The area provides habitat for mammals such as mule deer, coyote and cougar. Migratory birds and native fish also call the area home. 
## Nearby Attractions

 The Camp Sherman Fish Viewing Platform allows visitors the chance to view a variety of types of fish while the Metolius Research Natural Area gives bird watchers ample opportunities. Visit the Metolius Fish Hatchery or Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery display ponds to observe and feed different types of salmon and other fish. The Metolius-Windigo Trail, open to hikers, bikers and horses, is more than 100 miles in length and begins near the Metolius River headwaters west of the town of Sisters, Oregon. The trail was created in the 1980s primarily to serve long-distance horse riders seeking an alternative to the Pacific Crest Trail. Lava Lands Visitor Center in nearby Bend, Oregon, and the unique geological landscape of Newberry National Volcanic Monument draw visitors to the region as well. It is a great starting point for visitors to learn about the diverse landscape and history of the area through interpretive programs and exhibits. Visitors can also explore the Lava River Cave, located in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. At 5,211 feet in length, the northwest section of the cave is the longest continuous lava tube in Oregon.

The Best Camping Near Camp Sherman, Oregon

A lot of the campsites are right on the Metolius River, which is a great spot for fly-fishing. The views are amazing. There have been logs submerged in the river to assist with fish habitats, which can cause some nasty accidents if you’re rafting or canoeing down the river. There is also usually a fire ban due to a lot of past wildfires, so you can’t use the fire pit in your campsite. The Camp Sherman General Store is about 2 miles down the road from the front entrance. It’s worth paying a visit, because they have donuts. And other stuff. But mainly donuts. Around the beginning of summer, the mosquitoes start coming out, and thy are unbearable. Bring lots of bug spray, or maybe bathe in it. You’re gonna need it.

Wonderful, peaceful spot. Not far from amenities, but remote enough. Spots are nicely spaced out.

We were able to get one night here last minute as it is usually reserved. Sites are drive through and quite large. River runs along one side of campground. Beautiful area!

Large Campsites

This campground is $27-$30/night, and is really nice and peaceful as are all the other USFS campgrounds along this road. A little pricey for what you get, but the location is amazing, the river is beautiful.

  

Almost no cell reception here. ATT seemed to have some, but Verizon didn't. Pit toilets and dumpsters here, RVs ok, no water. Great river access, and the roads coming in are nice and smooth and freshly paved.  Some pull through sites available. Heavy tree coverage in this area, but some open spots that might work for some solar or starlink.
