Free, first-come dispersed camping on BLM land outside Juntura requires some planning before you pull off the highway. The access road is rough and rutted, particularly toward the end, where deep ruts can catch low-clearance vehicles off guard. AWD is strongly recommended, though reviewers report that most cars can manage if driven slowly, and the road does include turn-around spots. A few sites can accommodate small trailers. No hookups, restrooms, or developed facilities exist here. Campfires are permitted, and pets are welcome.
The draw is the Malheur River and the hot springs located on an island at the horseshoe bend. Reaching the springs means wading across the river, which moves fast enough that water shoes or a walking stick are worth bringing along. Not all visitors find the springs on their first attempt, so look for the island at the tip of the horseshoe. The surrounding landscape features open hills and river views. Bruce S. sums up the etiquette standard here: "pack it in, pack it out."
Camping spots are spread out and open, with several makeshift fire rings already in place. Reviewers note roughly five usable sites, and the area is open enough that multiple groups can camp without crowding each other. The site has no shade structures, so expect full sun exposure. This is carry-in, carry-out camping with no trash service.
Campers wanting a developed alternative nearby can check out Chukar Park Campground to the west, or BLM Dispersed near Juntura — Hilltop for another no-fee option a short distance away.
