Where Douglas Creek meets Lake Sakakawea, this Army Corps of Engineers campground provides free camping year-round in a forested setting. The rough access road requires careful navigation, but campers reach basic amenities including toilets and picnic tables. Pets are welcome throughout the grounds.
The creek-side location puts campers close to water activities on the expansive reservoir. With no fees or reservations required, the area attracts visitors seeking a simple base camp. Campers wanting more developed facilities can explore campgrounds around Garrison or check out Lake Sakakawea State Park Campground for additional services.
Description
The campground and recreation area is free to the public and offers 19 spacious campsites. Douglas Creek offers easy access to Lake Sakakawea just outside the city of Garrison. Campground consists of primitive campsites with picnic tables, grills, vault restrooms, boat ramps, and courtesy dock. This is a hot spot for fishing for Walleye and Pike throughout the spring and summer. Campsites are near the water with several pine trees all around for protection from the wind. In the fall this offers great pheasant and deer hunting in the area with several food plots located nearby in WMAs.
