    Whipoorwill Campground

    Welcoming / Outdoors

Owners that we spoke with to reserve our area and take care of us was just the southern hospitality you always hear about. Super nice and welcoming and always has a smile on their face. The owners live on the property in the house, which I thought was awesome in case we needed anything. Everyone else that either drives by or lives by us always waving and stopping for conversations, just as polite as can be.

Was told this land is approximately 400 acres of wooded and fielded areas housing multiple horses and horse pastures. They have a horse arena here that holds events weekly. Love the horse atmosphere and watching them do their thing from day to day. Plenty of paths and areas to walk around and stretch your legs, along side multiple ponds with catch and release only fishing. Well off the main road as well so you hardly hear any traffic.

The whole place is so very clean: the bathrooms, camping areas, swimming pool area, even the dumpsters area. The grass is very well kept, the roads and signage, well maintained.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Book at least 2-3 weeks in advance for weekend stays, especially during summer months or event weekends. Spots fill quickly when horse events are scheduled at the on-site arena.

Weather considerations: The coastal proximity brings occasional strong winds and afternoon thunderstorms, particularly from June through September. Secure loose items at your campsite and have weather-appropriate gear for horses.

Accessibility factors: Most equestrian sites require navigating unpaved roads with moderate inclines in some sections. Larger horse trailers may need assistance during wet conditions at certain times of year.

Tips for camping with families

Children's activities: Kids can enjoy designated swimming areas and supervised fishing opportunities. Many campsites offer space for lawn games and outdoor activities near pasture viewing areas.

Safety protocols: All children must follow specific rules around horse areas and pastures. Established boundaries keep both children and horses safe during your stay.

Shared responsibilities: Encourage family participation in horse care routines. Many younger campers enjoy learning about feeding schedules and basic grooming under adult supervision, creating valuable educational experiences.

Tips from RVers

Hookup availability: Most equestrian camping sites offer partial hookups with water and electric, though not all provide full sewer connections. Plan accordingly with tank capacity for your stay duration.

Parking configurations: Position RVs to create natural windbreaks for horse areas during coastal weather events. Most sites accommodate standard-sized horse trailers with living quarters, though specialized arrangements may be needed for larger rigs.

Supply considerations: Bring extra water hoses and electrical cords as hookup locations may be positioned farther from parking areas to accommodate both RVs and horse trailers in the same site.
