    Welcoming / Outdoors

Owners that we spoke with to reserve our area and take care of us was just the southern hospitality you always hear about. Super nice and welcoming and always has a smile on their face. The owners live on the property in the house, which I thought was awesome in case we needed anything. Everyone else that either drives by or lives by us always waving and stopping for conversations, just as polite as can be.

Was told this land is approximately 400 acres of wooded and fielded areas housing multiple horses and horse pastures. They have a horse arena here that holds events weekly. Love the horse atmosphere and watching them do their thing from day to day. Plenty of paths and areas to walk around and stretch your legs, along side multiple ponds with catch and release only fishing. Well off the main road as well so you hardly hear any traffic.

The whole place is so very clean: the bathrooms, camping areas, swimming pool area, even the dumpsters area. The grass is very well kept, the roads and signage, well maintained.

Convenient horse facilities: Equestrian campers appreciate dedicated infrastructure for their animals, including paddocks, hitching posts, and washing stations. Many sites offer direct access to trails from stall areas.

Southern hospitality: The welcoming atmosphere extends to both riders and non-riders alike. At Whipoorwill Campground, Mathew G. experienced genuine local warmth: "Owners that we spoke with to reserve our area and take care of us was just the southern hospitality you always hear about. Super nice and welcoming and always has a smile on their face."

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most equestrian campgrounds near Maysville require advance booking, especially during popular riding seasons or event weekends. Contact facilities directly to inquire about stall availability alongside camping accommodations.

Weather considerations: The coastal plain location means hot, humid summers and mild winters. Summer thunderstorms can develop quickly, so prepare appropriate shelter for horses and humans. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable riding conditions with moderate temperatures.

Horse health documentation: Campgrounds typically require current Coggins tests and health certificates for visiting horses. Check specific requirements when booking, as some facilities may have additional vaccination requirements beyond state minimums.

Tips for camping with families

Child-friendly equine activities: Several campgrounds offer supervised horse experiences for younger visitors. These may include guided pony rides, grooming lessons, or educational sessions about horse care and behavior.

Safety protocols: Family groups should establish clear guidelines about interaction with horses. Children must understand appropriate behavior around equine areas, maintaining safe distances from unfamiliar horses.

Non-equestrian alternatives: For family members who don't ride, many campgrounds provide additional recreational options. Fishing ponds, hiking trails, and game areas offer alternative activities when not participating in horse-related events.

Tips from RVers

Trailer parking logistics: Horse campgrounds typically provide separate parking areas for trailers once horses are unloaded. Position rigs to allow easy access to both stables and camping facilities.

Hookup availability: While most equestrian campgrounds offer basic hookups, capacity and amperage vary significantly between facilities. Some provide limited 30/50-amp service, while others offer full hookups with sewer connections at premium sites.

Equipment considerations: Pack additional water hoses for equine use separate from RV freshwater systems. Many experienced equestrian RVers recommend bringing portable corral panels for flexible containment options beyond provided stalls.
