Campsites are very large, all flat fields with plenty of natural privacy and shade. This pristine land is as good as it gets!! We strive for a positive camping experience rain or shine and can assist even the newest of campers. Located 30 miles from Atlantic city and 31 miles from Philadelphia. Our sites are completely rustic open field and wooded far away from roads. Walk from parking to site 1 is 500 feet.

If you’re looking for Pine Barrens camping in New Jersey, Wharton State Forest is where you’ll want to roam. The center of the forest is the farthest point from a road in the whole state, and the Wharton State Forest campground lies in the thick of cedar, pine, and oak trees. Wharton State Forest covers 122,880 acres, which is but a small portion of the one-million-acre New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve.

 Camping in Wharton State Forest can only be reached by hiking or boating in—the latter is a popular option for canoeists who enjoy winding streams through the Pinelands, as well as the 50-mile Mullica River. Campsites sit on both the Batso River and the Mullica River. 

 Wharton State Forest is home to some history as the previous site of iron furnaces and sawmills during the industrial revolution. Basto Village, established in 1776, was the central community of the industry, and some of the original buildings have survived and been restored by the state. Visitors can tour certain Basto Village structures, located at the southern edge of Wharton State Forest. 

 Visitors can reach the highest point of the Pinelands National Reserve by hiking the Batona Trail to Apple Pie Hill, where they’ll climb another 60 feet into an active fire tower with a bird’s eye view. The tower is only accessible while staffed by a fire watcher. 

 Campers will find primitive sites spread across Wharton State Forest, including Goshen Pond, Bartona, Hawkin Bridge, Godfrey Bridge, Bodine Field, Mullica River, Butterwood Hill, and Atsion family campground.

Located near the Mullica River, just east of where it empties into New Jersey’s Great Bay, the Chestnut Bay RV Campground offers a quiet place to park your rig away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Atlantic City. Bordered by small Chestnut Lake on one side, and the Port Republic Wildlife Management Area on the other, the campground offers nearly 200 full- and partial-hookup sites. Most sites are back-in, open and grassy with picnic tables. There are also tent sites and several fully-equipped cottages available to rent. The campground’s central area has restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities, as well as a clubhouse, adult lounge and small store. A dump station is located near the campground entrance. Dogs are permitted, but must remain leashed. Campsites are $55/night; reservations accepted. There are numerous outdoor activities available right in the resort for keeping the young and young-at-heart occupied. There’s a sandy playground for kids, plus a swimming pool, putt-putt golf course, horseshoe pits, volleyball and basketball courts, and fishing on Chestnut Lake. There are also hosted activities, such as arts and crafts classes, card and bingo games, and community dances and potlucks. The historic village of Smithville is just a few minutes south on Highway 9, where you can wander along cobblestone streets and peruse the village’s shops, eateries and ice cream parlors. When you’re ready to visit Atlantic City and the famous Jersey Shore and Boardwalk, it’s just 30-minute drive away. There you’ll find an abundance of dining, shopping and tourist attractions, as well as nightlife and adult entertainment.
