Johnson Lake State Recreation Area's main campground sits along the shoreline of a 2,000-acre reservoir in south-central Nebraska. The campground features sites ranging from lakefront locations to interior spots, with a mix of pull-through and back-in configurations for RVs plus designated tent areas closer to the water.
Sites 77-86 offer pull-through access, while the remaining RV spots require backing in. Electric hookups provide 30 and 50-amp service, though water hookups are not available at individual sites. Campers must use the dump station for waste disposal, though construction has periodically affected its availability. The campground layout places sites fairly close together, but landscaping with planted bushes provides some separation between neighboring spots.
Lake access drives much of the activity here, with fishing opportunities and boat launches available. "Fireflies every night, nice bathrooms, and fishing wasn't bad," notes Kali D.. The bathhouse facilities include showers, though these close during off-season periods. Site 76 offers particularly good lake views according to recent visitors.
The campground operates year-round and accepts reservations. For those exploring the region, campgrounds near Elwood provide additional options. The close spacing between sites makes this location better suited for groups comfortable with nearby neighbors rather than campers seeking solitude.
