Free camping with full hookups is a rare find, and Karrer Park in McCook, Nebraska delivers exactly that. This city-run campground has seven first-come, first-served sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups, plus a dump station on-site. There are no reservations, stays are capped at three days, and the access road has been flagged as rough, so tow vehicles and low-clearance rigs should approach with care.
The park sits alongside a small river, with trees ringing the sites and grass underfoot. Reviewers have noted dragonflies in numbers large enough to keep mosquitoes in check, though mosquitoes are still present near the water. One reviewer flagged that not all electrical hookups were functional, so it's worth testing your connection before settling in. Noise is part of the picture here: an airport sits across the street and a railroad runs behind the park, mixing with road traffic.
Curt, a 2021 visitor, summed it up plainly: "You can't really ask for much more from a free site." The park is well-maintained according to multiple reviewers, with restrooms available on-site. No showers are available. McCook's town center is walkable in theory but reviewers describe it as a longer walk for dinner, making it more practical to drive. Campers wanting developed recreation nearby can find it at Red Willow Area — Red Willow State Recreation Area about eleven miles north. For a free overnight stop in southwest Nebraska with hookups included, Karrer Park is worth a look.
