## Overview

 White Earth Group Use Shelter is located at White Earth Campground, just east of the town of Winston, Montana, on Canyon Ferry Reservoir. In 1805, the Lewis and Clark expedition passed through this region. On July 22, 1805, Sacagawea recognizes the country and assures the men that the three forks of the Missouri were of no great distance. This news gave the expedition hope in the anticipation of soon reaching the headwaters of the Missouri River.

 Canyon Ferry Reservoir offers a wide range of year-round recreational opportunities. Water related activities include everything from swimming and fishing to sailing and motor-boating. Canoeists and kayakers explore the many quiet backwater bays. Jet skiers, windsurfers and water skiers skim the summer waves, while winter draws ice fishermen and ice skaters.

 White Earth Group Use Shelter is 30' X 44' shelter with electrical power. The shelter has 8 picnic tables, 5 campsites and an accessible vault toilet. White Earth Campground has 36 designated campsites, a boat ramp, and a parking area for boat trailers. During the peak summer months services include vault toilets, potable water, trash, recycling containers and campground hosts.

The Best Camping Near Townsend, Montana

Have stayed here twice, once in the winter and the other time in the spring. Nice quiet campground right on the lake. Large shelter is nice to use if it starts to rain. Can get windy at times depending on which site you are at, some have trees to provide a wind break.

Walk in sites were available, the  privy was realllly clean, the sites were breezy, and very quiet.

The campground was alright. Nice big campsites giving you plenty of room. Sites had fire pits, picnic tables, and were somewhat level. It sits right beside the reservoir so a nice view. The road getting there was extremely dusty! And it was six miles of dust! There are a few pit toilets and there is potable water in the picnic area. You can dump at the KOA down the road for a small fee.

Camped here one night in late June. Camp was very clean and pretty full with a few sites open. Was able to get a site just a few days before. Had great views of the water with an amazing sunset. Had no issues with cell service. It is a cute drive through some farms to the campground for a few miles. Would come back. 

One night at White Earth

Campground is in great location. Right on water just 6 miles off of main highway. It is a gravel road but super easy (no potholes) &amp; big rig friendly. Sites right on water. Open sky for starlink and decent cell service. A little loud during day for day use area (boat ramp &amp; beach area), but quiets down in evening. Picnic table and fire pits at campsites. No hookups but sites are relatively level. Beautiful 360 views. Can book easily on recreation site. Also pit toilets and water stations. Mosquitos are heavy in evening but that’s part of being around water. 


July 2025

We had been driving for 6 hours when I searched out a campsite near Helena, Montana. Found this campground and took our chances on something being available.  We have a 23ft trailer and Drove 6 miles down the best dirt road ever and arrived. Camp host was very helpful and there were many sites available. We chose site #028 right on the water for two nights. You  have to make your reservation through recreation.gov 
It’s only $5.00 a night with America the beautiful pass.
The night was very quiet and the sites were clean. 
There were people fishing and paddle boarding. 
I highly recommend this campground.
