The Best Camping Near Port Hope, Michigan

Large and very open grounds right on Lake Huron, plumbing, electrical, some playgrounds and of course the lighthouse. Enjoy beautiful sunrises and clear dark sky's over the open water for star gazing. Plus, constant breeze makes it always cool and very low mosquitoes.

Only crashed for the night

We chose this campground because it had rustic/tent sites left and because it is right on the water. I chose the last of the rustic sites because they appeared on the maps to be on the edge of the property, and we hoped that would allow our crew some privacy/quiet. Unfortunately we ended up between 2 roads so we heard a lot of cars, more in the mornings because folks also come to use the boat launch. There aren’t any trees on the lots, which we found disappointing. 

Wood was easily accessible - drop $5.00 and grab a bundle - and clean water was available. The bathhouse was clean and easy to get to. The sites were nice and grassy and the fire pits were cleaned out. Each site had a picnic table, which were in good condition. Loved that we were close to the lighthouse and to Port Austin (we went to the farmers market and t PAK) and Port Crescent State Park for hiking. 

We would camp here again but try to get a site on the water, so as to have some nature views. 

Nice campground, but no trees?!

Beautiful views of lake Huron.  Unfortunately lake height has taken away the beach.  The bathrooms are clean and the showers have lots of hot water.  Two playgrounds and some short trails, one in the woods and one following the shore.  Nice historical lighthouse museum, very friendly staff.  Dog friendly park.  Best sites are lakeside and on the corner lots. Otherwise it feels a bit like a parking lot.  No shade! Most of the trees have been lost to the emerald ash borer.
Worth another stay especially for boaters.

Took my girlfriend camping for the first time - she requested a must have bathroom/shower. 

While I prefer more rustic and forested camping this spot did the trick. You’re right on the lake shore (no beach and not great for swimming). No tree coverage but great sunset view and right next to the lighthouse. Very RV heavy with about 6 ‘rustic’ sites which basically meant just no electric. Picnic table and fire pit included. 

Great for what it was

This is more of an RV park than a campground. The sites are a good size, but there is no privacy, and you are "camping" with a lot of seaonal RVers (if you're in the full hookup area). Having said that, we had a nice weekend camping here with friends and enjoying the area. The staff is very friendly, the views over Lake Huron are great, and the park overall is a peaceful spot to relax.

Quiet RV park on the lake

Well kept sites, friendly people, and beautiful views of Lake Huron.
The lighthouse had just closed for the season, which was disappointing. But I wouldn’t hesitate to return.

So peaceful

This county park (open May 15– October 15) has a mix of no hookup, electric only, and full hookup sites. We stayed here with friends in their 43-foot Class A in an electric site facing Lake Huron and the view was phenomenal! It would be a bummer if you had a site behind a large class A blocking your view of the lake. The full hookup sites were completely full mid-week in June. 

  

The sites are on grass and very close together with no separation/privacy between them, but the view of the lake makes it worth it. It rained all day the second day of our stay and the dirt road and grassy areas accumulated quite a few puddles. 

  

The bath/shower house was reasonably clean, but it took a few minutes for the motion light to go on (I thought it wouldn’t). Didn’t use the shower so cannot comment on that. 

  

There is a playground, boat launch (separate fee), and reasonably priced firewood ($5/bundle). You can tour the lighthouse for which the park is named for $5 per adult or $3 per child (but you can only climb to the top on select– usually holiday– weekends. The volunteers are very passionate about their knowledge of the lighthouse. 

  

We would definitely stay here again as long as we could get a water view site (and the price was reasonable).
