Luxury Lodging, With Cart Corrals

This Walmart Supercenter right off I-80 in Peru offers an easy, flat, and spacious parking lot, which is ideal for a quick overnight stay for RVs, trailers and even big rigs. Getting in and out is simple thanks to nearby highway access, so you won’t need to improvise any intricate parking maneuvers.

Inside, essential services are within arm's reach: fuel, groceries, pharmacy and even a Starbucks for that last-minute energy boost. The restrooms are the reliably clean Walmart style, which are well-lit and serviceable late into the night. Parking lot lighting adds comfort, too, though the lot remains fairly active well after dark (wink-wink).

Need more dining choices? You’ve got options: Olive Garden, McDonald’s, Arby’s, Red Lobster, Chipotle and Steak-n-Shake are all clustered nearby. As a bonus local gem, Rip’s Chicken is just a short drive away due west on I-80 and is a no-frills Illinois institution famous for crispy fried chicken, icy cold beer and long lines that prove it’s worth the wait. But if fried chicken isn't your thing, there's Lou's LaGrotto's for arguably the best pie around or The Igloo for a nice golden friend pork tenderloin sandwich washed down with a vanilla malt shake.

While scoring criteria may vary from one person to the next, here are the 5 most important criteria that informed my rating of this overnight location: convenience (EZ on- and off-access), safety & security, quality (of facilities), peace & quiet and amenities (either on-site or nearby).

Convenience: 5
