Papa Murphs Tavern & Campground - PERMANENTLY CLOSED

An open field setting with drive-up tent access defines this former campground that operated within walking distance of Starved Rock State Park. Papa Murphs combined camping with tavern access, creating an informal atmosphere where the bartender handled both drinks and camping arrangements.

The property featured basic amenities including drinking water, restrooms, picnic tables, and firewood availability. Campers could drive directly to their tent sites across the open terrain. One visitor noted the location offered "sooo much cheaper than SR and actually much close to the hiking trails," making it a budget alternative to more established options. The on-site bar provided evening entertainment within walking distance of campsites.

Winter camping was possible during the off-season, though staff expressed surprise at December requests. The campground served as overflow accommodation when other area facilities reached capacity. Visitors appreciated the proximity to local parks, with easy access to Matthiessen State Park and other regional recreation areas. Note that this facility has permanently closed. Campers should verify current operating status and consider alternatives like Sylvan Lake before making travel plans.

Great in the off season too

Bartender was perplexed when I asked to (car) camp in December but was very friendly and let me do my thing even in their off season! Sooo much cheaper than SR and actually much close to the hiking trails.
