Hiking and nature trails: Explore the diverse trail systems at Paul Wolff Campground, featuring paved, gravel, grass, and single-track surfaces. "There are miles of trails. On one hike we were on paved, sifted gravel, grass and single trek trails. There are a lot of loops giving you options. When we left we still hadn't hiked all of them," reports Art S.
Fishing opportunities: Fish directly from lakefront tent sites at Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort. "I recommend the lakefront tent sites, they are spacious and you can fish right from your site! The lake is beautiful and surprisingly picturesque as it is all nature preserve on the opposite side," writes Chloe N.
What campers like
Clean facilities: The bathrooms and showers at Turner Lake South receive regular maintenance. "The bathrooms/showers are always clean and have hot water. The only downfall that I can see is that they are not consistent with cleaning the outhouses," says Meg K.
Quiet evenings: Despite daytime activities, Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort provides peaceful nights. "We kayaked in the lake and it's small but nice. Great for kids lots of activities and space to play But very quiet and relaxing by nighttime," explains Christin D.
Wildlife viewing: Local preserves offer numerous animal sighting opportunities. "We hiked the trail and saw a mother deer feeding her 2 babies. Hard to believe that there is hiking trails like those in such a densely populated area just outside elgin, il," shares Tricia E.
What you should know
No equestrian camping facilities: None of the campgrounds near Bannockburn provide horse corrals or dedicated equestrian camping areas. Horse-friendly campgrounds are not available in the immediate Bannockburn area.
Seasonal mosquito issues: Be prepared for insects during summer months. "We stayed for 4 nights in June in a pull thru FHU. The mosquitos were pretty vicious... a couple of the regulars said it was the worst they'd been in years," warns Jenifer K.
Water hookup locations: At Big Rock Campground, water connections require planning. "Water hookup is far behind camping pad - bring extensions!" advises Amanda K., who notes that "water spigots are throughout, although not really at each space. I saw where some campers hooked about 150' of hose to spigots behind the loops to run to their campers."
Tips for camping with families
Budget-friendly options: Turner Lake South offers affordable tent camping. "These campsites are as low as $12/night!! One of my favorite spots to test new gear. Family friendly. There's some small trails around as well that are beginner," recommends Addison G.
Swimming areas: Turner Lake South Camping Area features clear water for swimming. "The lake was very nice. We were able to kayak but be careful getting the kayaks in. Stairs down to the pier and the bottom of the lake is very mushy. The water was very clear and you could see the fish swim by," notes Julia B.
Kid-friendly activities: Fish Lake Beach offers multiple recreational options. "There is so much to do at this campground. Horseback riding, archery, hiking, boating, fishing. There is also a park for the kids in several areas," explains Meg K.
Tips from RVers
Full-hookup availability: Some RV sites provide comprehensive utilities. "As someone who normally camps in state parks with only electricity hookups, this site was a welcome treat... Water + 50amp hookups. Wide, open spaces for kids to ride bikes and explore wildflowers," shares Amanda K.
Level parking pads: Campsites at Elkhorn Campgrounds offer easy setup for RVs. "Site, restrooms, and showers were clean. There are a lot of sites but still felt like there was ample space. Great location to visit Lake Geneva (~8mi.) or see a concert at Alpine Valley (~20 min)," explains Dan W.
Electric and water logistics: Prepare for varying utility positions. "The water hookups are kind of far from the individual sites (make sure you have extra hose)," cautions Rodney D., while another camper mentions "Easy access to electric and/or water. If unsure, contact office."
