Walnut Point State Park gives this campground its structure and character. Set within the state park near Oakland, Illinois, the campground divides into four named areas: Grey Squirrel and Fox Squirrel for RV campers, and two tent-specific zones in a shaded, wooded section closer to the lake. Sites in Grey Squirrel, particularly odd-numbered spots 15 through 25, back directly up to the water. Fox Squirrel sites are landlocked. Tents are permitted in the RV areas as well. The park has no swimming and prohibits motorboats, which keeps activity on the lake focused on fishing and paddling.
Fishing draws repeat visitors. The lake is described as well-stocked, and multiple reviewers note consistent catches across seasons. Kayak rentals are available through an on-site cafe that also sells firewood, bait, and snacks, and has operated dinner specials and occasional live music in past seasons. Firewood must be purchased at the concession building rather than gathered on-site. Walk-in tent sites sit in a wooded area with lake views, while RV sites include gravel pads, a grill or fire pit, and a picnic table. Some sites have decks; handicap-accessible spots are paved.
Facilities hold up well. Reviewers consistently mention clean bathrooms and a well-maintained shower house, and Brandi M. notes, "Bathrooms are clean and well maintained, I like that size of the showers." There is one dump station near the campground entrance, with water fill available there and at several points throughout the campground. No water or sewer hookups exist at individual pads, only electric. Reservations are available. Nearby alternatives include Hebron Hills Camping and Oakland City Park for campers weighing camping spots around Oakland. Walnut Point works best for anglers, paddlers, and families who want electric hookups and organized amenities without a high-traffic atmosphere.
