Great Sauk Trail EB Reststop

Fishing, hiking, biking, and kayaking are all listed as activities connected to this eastbound I-80 rest area at mile marker 51, just west of Princeton, Illinois. The paved parking area keeps passenger vehicles and truck lanes clearly separated, and the reviewer notes that spots on the passenger side stay quieter than those near the far back treeline, where engine noise from semis carries more. Restrooms are clean, picnic tables are available, and pet relief areas are on-site. No restaurants or stores sit directly adjacent, so resupply runs require continuing to the next exit. Campers wanting a more developed outdoor base can look at campgrounds around Princeton, or the Hennepin Canal Lock 21 Campground provides a quieter, nature-focused alternative a few miles southwest.

Roadside Overnight Parking Bliss

Located at mile marker 51 on eastbound I-80 just west of Princeton, this rest area offers straightforward access directly from the interstate. The parking area is spacious and paved, with clear separation between passenger vehicles and truck parking. The layout is simple and flat and ideal for pulling in, stretching your legs and grabbing a few hours of shut-eye. If you’re planning an overnight stop, aim for the passenger-side spots tucked away from the truck lanes to enjoy a bit more peace and less late-night engine hum, although the patch is less bright back by those semis, particularly in the far back near the treeline.

Facilities include clean restrooms, picnic tables for a quick stretch and vending machines for snacks or drinks. While there’s no Wi-Fi or restaurant on-site, the rest area has good lighting and clear signage as well as pet relief areas that are conveniently available for travelers’ furry companions. Overall, it feels like a safe, no-frills place to reset mid-road trip.

There aren’t any restaurants or stores directly adjacent to this rest area, so for food or supplies you’ll need to continue east. Within a few minutes of the next exit of Princeton, travelers can access gasoline stops like BP, Amoco, Beck’s and Shell, diners like Grace, bakery’s like Miss Betsy’s and Myrtle’s Pies, noteworthy restaurants like Paisano’s Ristorante, Wild Ginger Bistro& Wine Bar and Spoons& Forks, and convenience stores like an Ace Hardware, Dollar General and Walmart Supercenter to stock up before heading back on the road.

While scoring criteria may vary from one person to the next, here are the five most important criteria that informed my rating of this overnight location: convenience(EZ on- and off-access), safety& security, quality(of facilities), peace& quiet, and amenities(either on-site or nearby). Here’s how I ranked this particular overnight spot:

Convenience: 5

Safety & Security: 4

Quality: 3

Peace & Quiet: 4

Amenities: 3

Overall Score: 4

Happy Overnighting!
