Pine Creek Pass — FR 40253 Dispersed (Targhee NF)

Description

The crest of a ridge just south of Pine Creek Pass in the Caribou-Targhee National Forest holds this open-sky dispersed area, offering wide-angle views of the surrounding peaks and, on clear days, a distant look at the Grand Teton range to the east. Forest Road 40253 climbs steeply from the ID 31 pullout to reach multiple flat, level camping areas at the top — the road is rutted and washed out in sections, and wet or snowy conditions make it considerably more demanding, so high clearance is a practical minimum. Cell signal is reliably strong at the summit, and the exposed ridgeline setting brings consistent wind along with memorable sunrises and sunsets; expect mosquitoes through midsummer, especially before sunset.
