Description
Deep in the flatwoods of Ocala National Forest near the Saint Francis hamlet, this stretch of forest dirt road winds roughly a mile through dense canopy to reach the Saint Francis Dead River — a quiet, wildlife-rich corridor where otters, bobcats, and other forest residents are regularly seen along the bank. Pull-offs and side spurs along the route offer multiple camping options, with the river itself serving as a natural launch point for kayaks. The access track is rough with significant ruts and requires high-clearance; two-wheel-drive vehicles should approach with caution, particularly after heavy use.
