Free camping (dispersed) is allowed on most national forest lands except in highly developed areas - such as trailheads, campgrounds and picnic sites - and in some of our most visited places. Be sure to check for regulations in advance and look for signs in the area to indicate if camping is allowed.

Know Before You Go

Check the weather and road closures before heading up. 
Follow Leave No Trace principles. There are no facilities or trash receptacles. Pack out what you pack in. 
Make sure camping is allowed. Many lands within the national forest boundary are private or otherwise owned. Check that you’re on National Forest lands: maps.
Don't stay too long. Camping is limited to 14 days within any continuous 30-day period at any location within the same 20-mile radius. See Order

The Best Camping Near Georgetown, Colorado

The coordinates will take you directly to the first spot, you have to pass the pay-for campground on this road to get there. There are quite a few pull offs on the road, but there’s also a lot of private property so watch for signs. We only found two pull-offs with campfire rings. There are some toilets, picnic spots that say no camping, and water sources along the road also. The spot further down the road is a little more private but everything is along the Highway and cars are usually passing. It’s not too bad at night but the sites aren’t super private. 

Solid area to crash 

Crashed here again, and stand by everything we said last time but this time we spotted a silver fox on the camp site! It was definitely scared of us but clearly came up to this site and areas nearby often to scavenge for food so a good reminder to practice LNT principles and leave everything better than you found it!!

A beautiful spot. This is a really big pull of, right off the side of the main road. Easily accessible for both big rigs and small, low to the ground rigs. Has several pull offs all along this road both leading up to this one, and all along the pass if you keep going.

Lots of pull offs. Great for vans or small RVs. Do not recommend for anyone in a tent or those traveling with small children or pets. 

Roadside Camping

I stayed one night with no issues. The pull out is about 10 minutes off i-70 and is very large, so you could fit a couple of cars if you’re traveling in a group. I have Verizon and didn’t have service, not sure about other carriers. The only downfalls were the lack of privacy and people who were there before left lots of trash, broken bottles, etc.

Resources were running low on a Friday night so it was  great pull off great views close to idaho springs down town , nice hiking trails as well traffic is pretty much non existent after 9pm

Buddy and I needed a spot to crash for the night and it was us and one other camper that we saw, enough room for privacy 

Easy to find, nice quite stay 

We got there around 8:00 pm and we’re the only ones there for about an hour. The spot has a really nice grassy area that can fit up to a 6 person tent. There wasn’t a fire ring there but there was a spot that someone had already burned so we made a rock ring. We were joined by 2 small fox, who were very curious. Beautiful view, traffic was very light.

We arrived late as it was already mostly dark and we didn't find the firepit. We had the place to ourselves! Woke up to a film crew who shared their lovely breakfast spread with us. There was a friendly fox. Beautiful scenery across the road!

This area is all paved. Don’t expect to put stakes in the ground. Any unpaved areas around it are not flat. 

Tent camp

Went a little further up to a different pull out (same road, maybe 1/2 mile or less up), which ended up being a little more secluded. No outstanding views but a good spot. No cars at night so it was very quiet. If you keep driving on the same road you’ll find a bunch of pull off spots. No internet but starlink was great.

Spot guarantee 

The pulloff is one of many along the road. It's big, gets you quite far back from the road. Very little traffic on the road at night, I didn't notice any. Peaceful area.
Not sure you could get a tent set up off of the pavement, but you could set one up on the gravel. I slept in my car.

We camped here after a Red Rocks show. The spot is a great area. About 20 minutes off of I-70. There are many pull offs along this road that could theoretically be good camp sites. However there are “no camping” signs, which is why I gave it 3 stars. Everything is great besides that: beautiful stars, good tent site, safe parking area. 

The spot we chose is a bit farther down the road than the one listed here. It’s in between the bend in the road. We parked at the pull off and walked down a small hill to find a good tent site and a fire ring. 

Also be aware it’s pretty chilly compared to just a few miles up the road. It was in the mid 30s at night. 

Great spot, minus the “no camping” signs

I slept ok and the spot was nice and big. A little bit of traffic but nothing crazy. Someone pulled in twice and was shining a light at me which made me uncomfortable but they left the second time and didn't come back. Prob would not stay here again

Comfortable but felt a bit off 

Very near Idaho Springs and road to location easy. Site is off road on broken but semi level asphalt. Small green patch with pines &amp; aspen trees. There is nice rock formation across the road. Only 1 rock fire-pit (didn't use because it started to rain). Nice place to stop if traveling through as we are. Kinda bummed that we didn't see a fox. 🦊
