East Portal Trailhead Dispersed — Roosevelt NF

Description

Roosevelt National Forest's East Portal sits at roughly 9,200 feet at the base of the Continental Divide, where a dirt road off County Road 16 dead-ends at the historic Moffat railroad tunnel. The trailhead's large parking area doubles as an overnight dispersed base for backcountry hikers heading into the James Peak Wilderness — trails to Forest Lakes and Arapahoe Lakes both depart from here. The access road is unpaved but passable without four-wheel drive; pit toilets are on-site, and expect train whistles from the active tunnel around the clock.
