The Best Camping Near Shoshone, California

We stayed here for one night on our way to a campsite inside Death Valley NP. Location is about an hour outside the park in a tiny little town that’s pretty quiet. They do have a Chevron and a diner that probably covers most traveler’s needs. It’s also situated in a beautiful area with gorgeous mountain views.

We stayed in a 22 foot RV at one of the hookup sites, they also have several tent sites and a few cabin spots. There’s a naturally heated pool, which looked pretty nice but we chose not to use for COVID reasons. The whole camp was super quiet while we were there with not many other campers. Weather was great this time of year. I would probably stay here again.


Beautiful, quiet spot near Death Valley

Shoshone is a quiet little place just south of the south entrance to Death Valley. The campground is small, and a little dusty, but it’s only an hour drive to Badwater from the south entrance and also an hour to Furnace Creek. 
They have full hookups, shower and laundry and a natural hot spring pool.
It’s really nice after a day on 100+ in Death Valley.
30 and 50 amp electric, water and sewer.
Sites are large, and level but not paved.


Nice oasis near Death Valley

There's a nice mix of tent and RV spots. It's by the highway but not loud. There's a spring fed warm water pool. Green grass, decent toilets and showers.

  

The wifi works, but there is no cell phone coverage here. 

  

There are some weird rules around no campfires, and maybe not cooking on camp stoves, but portable bbq are allowed, not really sure.

Decent place outside of the park. 

...because it actually has grass and trees! (Campgrounds down the road in Tecopa are just bare lots for the most part.) The Shoshone RV Park also has nice clean showers and laundry facilities, as well as wifi, which is helpful as there's generally no cell service or data in the area.  I didn't try the warm pool, so I can't vouch for it, but I did walk the nature trail and see the endangered pupfish in the habitat restoration area (check out https://www.newyorker.com/news/us-journal/the-queen-of-the-desert for more information on the town and the restoration projects) and enjoyed the winter birds (phainopepla, verdin, marsh wren, and of course ravens). The Shoshone Museum is worth a visit as well.

Nicest established campground in the area...

This is nice place to stop for the night in an area where options are a little thin. Much of the park is well shaded. I was camped on the North end near the entrance and my solar panels were fully shaded the whole  time  I was there. Fortunately I was able to charge the house battery with 115V at the service post. Cell reception in the park is really spotty and weak. It seemed to be better in the South end of the park. The restaurant is farther from the park than I was expecting. It is not very far but it is on the other side of the highway and far enough of a walk that I didn't really feel like walking down there with my dog to pick up a to-go order and bring it back. There is a nice pup-fish exhibit nearby, just outside of the park bounds but open to the public. I'm not sure I'd stop here again due to the poor cell reception.

Pleasant stopover, though not sure if I'll return. 

Two nights tent camping. 35$ a nite but considering it has everything a KOA has and is in California near a national park that's a pretty good price (KOA in Bakersfield charges upwards of 80 a nite for way less for example) (we didnt realize theres free blm dispersed camping right down the road, whoops). Wifi is good, grass is great for a tent, mostly rvers tho for sure. Warm water pool is excellent. Pupfish are cute. Walking distance to crowbar cafe and the extremely overpriced gas station (it's worth it to drive to pahrump nv to buy gas food cigs beer etc). Quick drive over to tecopa where we spent most of our time (recommend the free hot springs, food from kit fox cafe, beer from death valley brewery, hikes and food at the China ranch date farm and talking to all the weirdos that live in or frequent the area). Also highly recommend ripping up to death valley junction to take a tour of the spooky beautiful Amargosa Opera House. At the campground small little annoying rules about locking the bathroom, shower in men's room doesn't lock, but overall a good quiet, safe spot, would def come again if needing all the amenities. No fire rings at site, one group fire pit by library .

Oasis in the desert  

So, this park uses two names it appears.  Shoshone RV Park and Shoshone Village Campground.  It has 35 RV sites, some with 30 and 50 Amp service, along with water and sewer, 7 tent sites, and 2 group sites for tents.  There was a bustle of activity in the park when we arrived, as a tree service was doing a major pruning job on all of the cedar trees.  Although we chose a tucked away site, further away from the road when we booked online, we were reassigned a more 'cozy' site near the road because the tree guys were trimming the trees on the site we had chosen.  A bit of a disappointment, but what are you going to do.  

I think I signed about 6 pages of receipts and affidavits that I understood all of the rules for the park which included:  "No nude bathing or topless".  while using their warm springs swimming pool.  We didn't use the pool, so I can't comment further on that amenity.

We did use the laundry room.  It has 2 washers and 2 dryers.  It looked like it had not been swept in a while.

They give you a key when you arrive that opens all of the park's facilities.  

There is a great pizza cafe and brewer just a few miles south in Tecopa that I can recommend.  There is also a small convenience store/gift store in Shoshone Village that sells gas and fuel.  The price for a gallon of #2 Diesel was $6.09.9.  The store also had a couple of boxes of DEF on the shelf.  We didn't try the sole cafe in Shoshone, the Crossbar.

I might camp here again, but probably not for more than 1 or 2 nights.

Pruned Trees and All

Friendly good staff. Laundry and bathroom are clean. Lots of good green space for tents. RV sites are adequate with good water and power. Decent restaurant in town.
