Heart of the Mojave on Kelbaker Road

Scattered fire rings mark this dispersed camping area along Kelbaker Road, about a mile off Interstate 40 in the Mojave Desert. The Bureau of Land Management maintains this free site on flat, open terrain with mountain views stretching across the horizon. Big rigs up to 58 feet can access the main camping zone without difficulty.

Multiple camping spots spread across the area, though reviewers note varying levels of privacy and road noise depending on placement. One camper found a level spot with a fire pit at the top of a hill that provided complete solitude and full cell service, though accessing it may require four-wheel drive. The main area closer to the road accommodates standard RVs but sits within earshot of passing traffic.

Campers consistently mention litter scattered throughout the site, including spent shell casings, though some visitors work to clean up during their stays. Karen C. notes "short walk to beautiful sandy washes" from the camping area. The site can fill up on weekends with RVs, vans, and other vehicles spacing closely together, while weekdays typically offer more solitude.

Watch for weather conditions if rain threatens, as the access road crosses a wash that could flood. The nearest substantial town sits about 80 miles away, so arrive well-stocked with supplies and water.

Campers regularly cited stunning night skies and remote desert beauty as highlights, though site conditions vary greatly with litter concerns. Multiple guests pointed out excellent cell service and peaceful atmosphere away from the road.

Excellent spot off I-40

This spot really is a great place. Just 1.5 miles south of I-40, but a small mountain blocks the highway noise and view. There was some traffic in the morning and afternoons, which seemed to be a work crew doing something out past the camp spot. Traffic on Kelbaker is visible, but very light. I stayed three nights, with my only neighbors (two car campers) showing up late on the third night. I would have stayed all 14 days if not for the heat.

Great views great food overnight stay

Sheep’s Corral valley, didn’t see sheep! Short walk to beautiful sandy washes. We were the only ones there. Pretty flat spots too many little fire pits for such a small space. We picked up some “papers”, but overall not trashed. Felt safe.

Awesome

The spot right off the road behind that first hill isn’t that great, a little too close to the road for my taste BUT if you go down the road to the top of the hill there is one level flat spot with a fire pit. That spot is the best, couldn’t hear any cars, had great views, full AT&T service, totally alone.

Only thing I would recommend is having 4WD to get to it but you might not need it. Scout and decide for yourself first. Also if rain is in the forecast be alert since you have to cross a wash at the beginning. I imagine the road could get flooded or muddy.

Perfect on April 17

Everything slopes to the south. We had one other camper join us that evening. This is a great spot.

It’s ok.

23ft rv Beginning of april The camping area is small. There was one can there when we arrived on Friday , early in the day. By 5 pm there were several vehicles. Another rv parked about 30 ft away and a van pulled in at night and was about 15 ft behind us. The area is very pretty. Great mountains etc. bit if garbage around which always bums. Me out. Spent shell casings.
It’s ok in a pinch for sure and I could see it being good mid week when maybe nobody is around.

Easy access & astounding stars

The site is about a mile off I-40 and I had no problem pulling my 58ft rig into camp. My only major complaint is that a town of any legitimate size is about 80 miles away.

Pros: -good cell service -incredible view of the stars at night -beautiful landscape

Cons: -SO MUCH trash everywhere -very isolated
