Granite Pass Dispersed Roadside Camping — Mojave National Preserve

About

National Park Service

Welcome to Granite Pass Dispersed Roadside Camping in the Mojave National Preserve. This spot is a hidden gem for those who crave solitude and a rugged camping experience. Tucked away from the main road, it offers a peaceful retreat with stunning views of the surrounding desert landscape.

The area is known for its quiet and secluded atmosphere. You won't find any amenities here—no toilets, no showers, and no drinking water—so come prepared. Bring your own firewood and water, and be ready to pack out all your trash. The lack of facilities means you get to enjoy an unspoiled natural environment, perfect for stargazing and soaking in the beauty of the Mojave.

Visitors have mentioned that the road leading in can be narrow and a bit rough, but it's manageable with a 2WD vehicle. Just watch out for the plants that might scrape your car's underbody. Once you arrive, you'll find a few different spots to set up camp, each offering a good amount of privacy. The area is dotted with granite boulders, making for a picturesque setting.

Some campers have enjoyed short hikes into the nearby washes, and the sunsets here are nothing short of spectacular. If you're into photography or just love a good view, you'll appreciate the dramatic desert scenery. And if you're lucky, you might catch a meteor shower under the dark, clear skies.

Whether you're passing through on a longer road trip or looking for a quiet weekend getaway, Granite Pass offers a unique and serene camping experience. Just remember to leave no trace and respect the natural beauty of this special place.

Great Quiet Site

Went at the start of December on a Saturday and was the only one there. The road is manageable with a 2wd sedan as I got through fine with my Corolla, but I had my underbody scrapped the whole way there by the plants growing in between the tire tracks. The road is probably only 7 feet wide with only one small pull out a mile in. There's a couple of different camp spots at the end so even if there are other people there you can still get some privacy.

Epic Rocks, Quiet site

Awesome rugged camping in the middle of the Mojave. Cool little hikes into the washes. Nice and quiet, far and tucked away from the road. Loved it

Nice remote site

Nice remote area back from the main road, very quiet and beautiful views. There are at least room for two or three groups. Road in was very easy, we were in an Outback pulling a teardrop trailer and there were no problems getting back there. Easy turnaround spots at the junction of the roads near the camp spots. If the spots at the end of the road are full there are a couple of options in washes closer to the paved road but they are not as scenic.

Quiet and secluded.

Narrow entrance through bushes, you may get pinstripes. Several spots to camp among granite boulders. BLM placed fire rings, bring your own wood and water. Pack out all trash and waste. No amenities. Great star watching. A great escape.

Quiet, secluded and lots of stars!

We camped in the granite pass area, at a small previously established site with a fire ring, at the end of the established road. Gate nearby closing off entrance to a research site. Also a hiking trail that leaves from just behind where we camped. Road was narrow and dirt with a few tricky spots but our 2WD van got out here no problem. Only saw one other car on a Saturday night. Beautiful sunset!!

beautiful spot & great sleep

We arrived very late so it was hard to find the entrance to the dirt road - definitely recommend searching it by day. We found a spot even closer to the road but still far off. We were the only people around! its also great to see the stars

South of 40 off pipeline rd.

I arrived around midnight and tried to find a spot while it was dark north of 40 where the map here takes you. It looks like a nice area but the trails are very narrow. I was hoping to work the next day remotely but I couldn't find a spot with a T-Mobile signal. I ended up down off of Pipeline road just south of 40 off the same exit. Only one other camper nearby and they are 600+ yards away. Easy access right off the highway.

Feels like Mars

I would recommend this campground to anyone with light off road capability and roughly 8 feet side by side clearance. This was an amazing experience and will definitely be coming back here. This was a great stopping point to split up our drive from the Bay Area to the Grand Canyon. Thanks to the Dyrt we would not have found this hidden treasure; there were lots of people camped right off the highway and we got this beautiful camping spot all to ourselves. Watch out for the jumping cacti I got one in my leg!

Very isolated

This place is in the middle of nowhere. You are surrounded by these beautiful granite mountains. The kelsa dunes are only 30 minutes away which are super cool! There are fire pits which are nice. Besides that there is nothing else.
