Fort Sage Off Highway Vehicle Area

Off-road vehicle enthusiasts will find Fort Sage Off Highway Vehicle Area positioned along 3-4 miles of gravel road from Highway 395, offering direct access to extensive trail systems and sand dune terrain. This Bureau of Land Management site operates as dispersed camping with two distinct sections—an initial cluster of sites and a larger loop area with 5-7 designated spots located another half-mile deeper into the property.

Campers consistently report the area maintains a notably clean condition, with vault toilets that multiple reviewers describe as exceptionally well-maintained. Jules S. notes the sites are "very clean and quiet," while the facilities include concrete picnic tables, fire pits with grills, and regular trash service. The surrounding landscape of sage and juniper creates a high desert environment where coyote calls carry across the valley at night.

Trail riding opportunities extend throughout the Fort Sage system, with routes leading into sand dune areas where wild horses occasionally appear. The terrain accommodates various off-road vehicles, making this a staging point for multi-day riding adventures. Cell service varies by carrier, with AT&T providing minimal coverage while satellite internet performs well in the open terrain.

Access requires navigating the gravel road, which some campers describe as washboarded depending on recent maintenance. Big rigs can maneuver the route and camping areas, though the road surface may require slower speeds. Summer months bring intense heat without electrical hookups, making spring and fall more comfortable for extended stays. Sites fill partially on weekends but rarely reach capacity during weekdays.

For campers preferring developed amenities, Meadow View Equestrian Campground provides full hookups seven miles west.

The quality facilities including fire pits, picnic tables, and trash service impressed many visitors, though occasional OHV activity may create some noise.

Super scenery, and we've got it all to ourselves (Wed night!)

This is a really beautiful area! Very quiet and peaceful! Of course, it is a Wed night, so it could be very different on a weekend!😂

The grounds are VERY well kept! This is going to become a regular stop for us now! My wife has family in Redding, so this will be a nice overnight, before moving on the next day!

Great stop off

Road is well maintained gravel, no potholes. Sites are nicely spaced, large and maintained. Vault toilets were super clean. Sites have a table and bbq. Got lucky and no loud parties, neighbors were respectful. We arrived just after dark and only stayed 1 night so cant comment on the daytime or weekend vibes.

Stopped here based off the reviews on our way to Lake Tahoe.

EXCELLENT free campsites! Easy to get to, roughly 3-4 miles of gravel road (depending on how far back you come in). Campsites with tables, fire pits, and grills. Out house at current camp spot. Very clean and quiet. There are a few campsites about 1/2 mile up Fort Sage road, but if you continue another 1/2 mile there is a huge loop with 5-7 campsites. There may be more if you continue. I have AT&T and have 1 bar, but excellent starlink. Feel safe and can easily get a big rig in here.

Coyotes Yipping and Star Gazing

Absolutely wonderful campsite not too far off the Highway!!! Well maintained, quiet, peaceful. Only one other person was here when we got here, got here around 9pm and had no trouble setting up a tent. Beautiful fire pits, coyotes yipping in the distance while staring into a gorgeous night sky. Couldn’t ask for a better free spot!!! :D

Very quiet out of the way.

I stayed for one night before before going to Reno. The sun was setting I didn't want to set up in the dark. Got stuck setting up in the dark anyway. The dirt road on the way to the campsite is pretty washboarded. The campsite itself was about 2/3 full. Looks like a couple campers were here for quite a while.

Excellent for ATVs and SXSs

This place is so wonderful and free. We were the only people in our camp area for the entire stay.  If you go with some friends, Diamond Back has a perfect spot for two decent size RV's.

Very clean, trash pick up service was great and the vault toilets were nice if you were tent camping and needed a clean place to do your business.

Trail riding galore. Went on all the trails and out in the sand dune area we came upon wild horses, this was quite a site to see. They were just running and being playful.

I would avoid this place in the summer, hot and with no power it would be a sweat box.

Pristine spot. Cleanest pit toilets ever and they are lit up (great for late arrival). Quiet and smells like juniper and sage. Saw the Milky Way clear as. Fire pit, picnic table, and grill at each spot. Trash and recycling bins. Good service for T-Mobile.

I was here completely by myself and it was so beautiful. Pristine bathroom, great fire pits and grills at the sites, definitely a hidden gem and far enough off the highway to have zero noise. Totally recommend.

Super Clean and accessible campground

Two sections of campground, if first lot is full drive 1/4 mile back towards the mountains and there will be more sites. Vault pit toilets at both areas. Nice cement picnic tables and sturdy grills/pits for fire. Sage and Juniper surround this area. You can even hear the coyotes calling to one another at night. Pretty secluded and usually one can find solitude. Although, it is a great access point to the OHV Fort Sage Trails, so beware your neighbors will be hauling all sorts of mechanized toys. Dont forget to keep this pristine by following Leave No Trace principles.
