Our South Rim campground is open year-round. We are located in Tusayan, Arizona, one mile south of the park entrance, on Highway 64. The Imax Theater, the General Store, restaurants, and shopping venues are all within walking distance.  We offer RV sites with either 50 or 30 amp full hook ups.  Tent camping sites are available without hook ups,  with direct access to hiking on the Arizona Trail.    Our amenities include coin operated laundry and restroom/shower facilities.

The Best Camping Near Grand Canyon, Arizona

South of the park about 7 miles is Camper Village which had plenty of spots. It had hookups on gravel sites. Restrooms and showers were coin pay operated which was definitely a turn-off. At night around midnight, a neighboring Mexican bar, started what sounded like karaoke. This lasted most of the night so we didn't get much sleep.
We asked to be moved to the other side of the RV park and informed them about the loud music. We were tired but had planned to hike into the canyon that day. Carrying two backpacks of water, snacks and other miscellaneous supplies, we started down the crude hiking trail that only was 3 miles roundtrip. Going down, it was hot and our packs were heavy but it wasn't so bad. The path was a little slippery due to loose soil and the steep grade. We passed Ooh Ahh Point (.9 miles) and headed around Windy Ridge then had to move aside for a tour group on donkeys. One donkey stepped right on the edge and we were afraid it would fall over the side of the steep cliff. Finally we made it to Cedar Ridge (1.5 miles) and sat down for some PB&J sandwiches. A begging squirrel quickly approached for a handout.  Two female rangers were there to check on hikers and make sure everyone had food and water. One warned us that two storms were approaching from opposite directions and it would be wise to head back up soon. The trip back up was very rough with little shelter from the sun until we got closer to the top. Jason Jr. and SamBob pulled away from us several times and it seemed that they could keep going all day. I had to hold Wesley's hand to make sure he kept away from the edge or didn't slip on the loose gravel path. Big Jason ended up carrying both backpacks to the top since I was so exhausted. A slow, steady pace and lots of water breaks helped us finish the hike. Once at the top, we all were relieved and proud of this accomplishment.
Our new campsite didn't have working electricity so we decided to leave that night and drive a few hours towards our next destination.
They actually issued us a refund due to our bad stay there.
I would recommend staying within the park for a close-up, genuine grand canyon experience.




Bare bones camping close to Grand Canyon (South)

Definitely not a very nice place to stay.

We had an RV on our family trip into the Grand Canyon and we decided to spend the night here on our way in. This place is pretty gross - the toilets are nasty and the showers didn't work.

We would've been better off staying at Mather (which we did on a subsequent trip) if we had booked in advance we would've read the reviews and done a little research!

Yuck

I mean, how could it be bad?! Easy to find, obviously SO much to do. We spent three nights there with our pooch, but we could have spent longer. It was the perfect stop on our southwest road trip. A lot of people, but that is to be expected. Views are unreal. Very humbling to see such a natural beauty.

Beautiful, as expected. 

We were not impressed. After staying in the Grand Canyon at mather, we were high on the beauty of the park. On the way out we decided to stay at this place. While there all the amenities, it just wasn't what we were looking for. No shade at all at the campsites.

The grand canyon is still right there though. So you still have your hiking, biking, rafting and everything else special about the grand canyon.

Not to impressed after staying in mather inside grand canyon.

Every spot is a nice size and has plenty of room. Close to getting on the shuttle, food and beer! During the fall, the elk are loud at night, but it added to the experience. Bathrooms were always clean. Make sure to take your hammock down when you're not using it.

Every spot is huge!

Great campground, sites aren't too close to each other. We went during spring break and it wasn't as busy as expected. (Maybe we had a different Spring break than everyone?!) It was warm during the day and SUPER cold at night so be prepared with a heavy sleeping bag!

This was a great place to camp. Always in the shade. Level spot. Bathroom and wash basin close by. Pretty quiet for the size of the crowd.

Right in the park (if I have the right campground)

This  campsite is very close to the bus line that travels into the National Park. It is also right behind a couple of restaurants as well as a general store that has tourist gifts along with essentials.  The site was quiet, staff was knowledgeable and friendly and the other campers were respectful of others.  the only down side I found was there were no trees for shade and privacy.  

Quiet, close, convenient 

This was near the Grand Canyon, which is why we chose it. Full hookups, no shade in our spot but it’s cooler in this area so it wasn’t too hot. Campfire pits were available and made our stay so much better! Stores and restaurants are nearby. We bought some groceries and made dinner. We did feel the grocery store was expensive so I suggest getting groceries before you head here.

Near the Grand Canyon

Super hot during the day and super cold at night. Along the trails there was still some snow in the shade. The campsite were more spaced out and roomy.

Quiet and peaceful 

we lost our tent due to wind, blew over and was completly destroyed. tons of crows in the area.. cannot leave any food even a loaf of bread out. and the shower house is on the other side of the canyon, bring quarters its not free.... other than that beautiful views and would love to do again with a better tent or rv.

Nice

A little on the pricy side of campgrounds, but well worth it. Shuttle service running to the Grand Canyon from the campground is great and location could not be better. Great modern facilities.

Vast Views 

We stayed for one night and it was super close to the canyon entrance which was great. The rv pull through were a little close together and if we set up our sewer pipe we would have had our doodie pipe right in front of our neighbors truck. We felt bad so never hooked up. Heard coyotes howling as they walked through the camp at night. That was awesome!

Nice little rest stop on our way through the Grand Canyon. Great scenery and good staff. 

Not bad 

So if you are looking for a Full Hookup RV parking / camping spot with no thrills other than being 10 minutes from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, this camping spot is for you. But be advised, it’s expensive ($70 per night) and they really jam you in tight with other campers. There are no open fires allowed. The bathrooms are super clean. 

It’s okay

A good base for the Grand Canyon due to it being only a mile from the south rim entrance. They pack the RVs in, sites are right on top of each other. It’s pretty much a really expensive parking lot. Showers cost $2/8min. There was no hot water the first day and we let management know and they gave us a token and fixed it quickly. Our site was full hook up but if you don’t have full hook up they charge for water fill and dump. Laundry was $3 to was and $3 to dry. They do have propane fill. Everything is pretty expensive in the village so I guess you’re paying for convenience.  

Great to experience the Grand Canyon but will most likely not be back. 

Wouldn’t Come for a Long stay

Other reviews were right on....its a dusty parking lot. That’s it. The location can not be beat if you cant get into Grand Canyon proper. It’s a short drive to the entrance, and seeing how far other rv locations were away this is by far the closest option. The sites are flat, and that is the end of the good things about this place. The bathrooms are in much need of repair. Showers were pay by the 8min session, and did get hot fast. 
It’s good for the location but that’s about it. 


Well...

We couldn't believe how empty it was, super close to the park and met some great people. Our water heater and furnace broke down and few people were willing to help. Not many long term people which is great. The office let me borrow the surge protector for the time I was there, Carol was great.

Hidden gem super close to Grand Canyon

Very conveniently located just outside of the Grand Canyon’s southern rim. Stayed here due to Kaibab Nat. Forest being closed with forest fire. Easy after hours site reservation. Had to wait until the morning to buy shower tokens, but that was okay as they opened at 8am. Had an elk stroll right up to our tent site. Obviously very comfortable with people. 

Very Close to Grand Canyon

Just south of the Grand Canyon National park. It was a breeze to go back and forth between the campground and park. Nice and quiet and the people in the office are nice. We loved eating dinner and watching the elk every evening. 

Location Location Location 

Site is at the end of town so you can walk to and from the town easily, its then just a short drive to get into the park at the south rim gate.  Elk/deer? wandering around inside the campsite. We were in an RV, full hookups, not too busy.

Nice spot close to town and park entrance

Perfect for exploring the Grand Canyon for a few days. You can walk to the canyon rim or walk to shuttles that will take you anywhere in the park. Grocery store also within walking distance (10 min?). Wildlife wander through camp grounds. Some nearby trails are good for walking the dogs, just keep an eye out for elk.

Great location

We would not recommend this camping as we’ve have a bad experienced except for the friendly staff. The bathrooms are dirty and only one of them was open out of many. Our site was on the other side of the camping which was very inconvenient. There is a slight sketchy atmosphere and to us very overpriced. Other cheaper camping might give you a better experience. The staff is very friendly and will help you find the best places at the Grand Canyon. 

Not recommended except for staff

We stayed 1 night to get to the Grand Canyon in the morning. We arrived late but gave staff a heads up. They had everything we needed waiting on the office door. Check in and out was a breeze. We did struggle to find our site number but that’s because the signs were covered in snow. It had just snowed that night so nothing could be done by staff to fix this. The map was helpful so we quickly found it after wiping off a few signs. 

The office was great! Had lots of things that are useful(RV safe toilet paper!!), DVDS to rent, etc. Located right behind a Starbucks and great touristy general store. 

Distance to the Grand Canyon couldn’t be beat. 

Bathrooms were in a central location but locked. I believe this is to prevent frozen pipe damage so we weren’t bothered by it. 

Easy check in and great location to the grand canyob

Absolutely perfect to get in and out of the Grand Canyon south rim. Only one mile from the entrance. Great small town just outside the campground too. Quant shops, Starbucks, IMAX, airport, and restaurants. We got a full hook up pull through. Hook ups were adequate at best. Showers and restrooms were disgusting, but we did not use them. Absolutely no WiFi, cable or reception. They do rent movies for $1.00, but limited old copies. Site 51 needed a lot of leveling, but had a fire ring. Absolutely loved the elk coming most mornings, and mustangs in evenings. The National forest area behind the park, was good hiking. Trailer Park with some sketchy characters walking around was attached to the campground. Overall for four days it was ok, especially given how close it was to the park!

Close to everything 

I grow up in the SD area and never know about Sweetwater Regional Park, I kicked myself for missing out on the years of great camping I missed out on. A jewel in your own back yard.

Shake down 08/22

Great place for visiting the Grand Canyon. The park also has a few restaurants within walking distance which is nice. The staff was always very friendly and helpful. The bathhouse is old and in disrepair. Cleanliness is questionable. Hard to tell if it's dirty or just really old. You also need to have a shower token (cost is $2 for campers) and the shower will cut off after 8 minutes. The overall condition of the bath house should be improved if you aren't going to offer a sewer hook up. They claim to have it but I didn't see a single site with it on my morning dog walks. Sites are also quite narrow.

Convenient 

When I booked my stay the only available sites were non full hookups. Upon arrival I asked if any full hookup sites were available, and there were not for my entire stay. When I pulled in to the assigned spot I saw something that looked quite like a sewer hookup. I jumped out of the truck and sure enough it was. As luck would have it I didn’t bring enough hoses and I bought a poo cart. Anyway the site was a bit un-level, but who cares I had just enough blocks, and we were 1/4 mile from the rim of the Grand Canyon. Wednesday- Friday we experienced perfect weather, and by Saturday after a 9.5 mile hike to Indian Gardens campground the wind was really gusty. Wind, rain, then snow continued until around 6am Sunday, and there was a blanket of snow on everything except the roads. After breakfast and an extended pack up because of the cold we were able to pull out around 2pm and the camp hosts had no issue with a late departure. All in all a fantastic long weekend, and will definitely be back in the spring. Not all info on their website is correct so call Margo in the check in shack for most up to date info. Reserve early, bring a bike, and enjoy.

Perfect in every way 

It is a nice park with spacious sites. If coming from Utah and taking 64 out of Cameron, you will be going through the park. Just a heads up. 

Super close to the south entrance of the Grand Canyon

Let’s start with the pros:  1) 5 mins from the canyon! 2) Electrical hookup. 3) Its not terribly un level 

Cons: 1) Although the daytime temps are well into the 40’s/50’s they don’t allow/ turn on water hookups during the day. I can understand shutting off water during the freezing night temps but during the daytime and well above freezing it would be nice to have the option of filling your tank up instead of hauling water from their one working water spigot. 
2) No dump station that we were aware of
3) Wi-Fi is not great 
4) only one working shower/ restroom on the lot and that was way at the front end and IT WAS FLOODED the first day
5) they stack people in next to each other despite being virtually empty
6) They charge for showers. And the restrooms and showers are NOT a spa experience to say the least. 
Obviously they know a lot of people that book online would want refunds therefore, they don’t allow refunds at all. Not even a 2 day advance notice refund. Considering the price of this campsite, you’re better off dry camping in the National forest. 

If you’re desperate 

We got here in winter, off the tourist season, so the camping is quite empty and silent. Is run by extremely friendly and organized people. We got to the camping late at night not really knowing what to expect, they let us a letter with a camping map on the office door 🥰 there are public showers, didn’t use one, cannot really say of they are good or not. Public toilets are not great though… 

Nice and friendly place

Whilst it is the cheapest RV park in the vicinity of the Grand canyon it is well overpriced and the amenities are probably the oldest I've seen. In winter they turn the water at each site off and then have the audacity to charge you to use their showers. Overall would not recommend unless you are travelling on a budget and just want a place to legally park your van with some power - I won't be back.

Pratique

I’ve stayed twice at Trailer Village (there is no Camper Village). It’s the only campground in the Park that has hook-ups (you can camp at Mather Campground w no hook-ups if you are under a certain length). 

Our most recent stay the campground seemed almost half-empty and was quite nice. Our first stay we were packed in like sardines and that obviously destroys the ambience.

There are bathrooms, but we had no Wi-Fi and showers and laundry is located at Camper Services, a three minute drive or a twenty minute walk. You do have to pay for showers. So as far as amenities, not really many (though we had no issues w water like other reviewers).  There was a nice grass space next to our campsite with a picnic table.

The advantage of this campsite is that the Park shuttle has a stop right at the front of the campground and you can explore most of the Park without a car by utilizing the shuttle. Additionally, the market is a nice 20 minute walk. 

So super basic campground, but great location. And yes, more expensive than other campgrounds but 1/3 the price of the cheapest hotel room in the Park.

Basic campground with good location

Had full hookups but smaller spaces. No real amenities, no WiFi, super slow cell data. Was not crowded and was quiet. 

Very basic campsite 

Surprisingly the gravel site was level but over grown by weeds. 294 sites plus tent area and only a quarter occupied.  Small old restroom. Pay for your showers. Has laundry room. Has picnic tables. Great location to grand canyon. Close to a great general store and restaurants. This would be an awesome place with some TLC.  Way over priced .
