Within Captain Cook State Park, Discovery Campground provides drive-in access to sites positioned along Point Possession with views of Cook Inlet, Mount Redoubt, and the Alaska Railroad's Spur line. Most of the $20 per night sites face the water, though campers report limited privacy between spots. The state-managed facility includes drinking water, restrooms, picnic tables, and allows campfires with available firewood.
Beach access requires only a short walk from the forested campground area. Cell service reaches the sites, and both pets and alcohol are permitted. Discovery Campground sits nearby for campers wanting additional options in the same coastal setting.
Description
Discovery Campground is located within the Captain Cook State Recreation Area, which is virtually undiscovered by most visitors to the Kenai Peninsula. It offers a peaceful setting of forests, lakes, streams and saltwater beaches.
Wildlife you may see during your visit includes moose, bear, coyote, wolves, Beluga whales, harbor seals, beaver, muskrat, bald eagles, sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, arctic and common loons, golden-eye ducks, mergansers, thrushes, warblers, and jays.
