Perfect Appalachian primitive camping

This campground is in Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest, not far from 81. The camping is very basic, just a pit toilet and a water pump, all very wooded and, all spots very close to the road.

Yay: Simple and beautiful. On site there isn’t much to do but there are tons of hiking trails nearby, including the AT, plus fishing. All sites are shady.

Nay: FYI closed winter. This is dispersed camping so there can be a lot of trash :( We’ve been here twice and once it was pristine and once it was a disaster (broken bottles to shotgun shells). The drive there is on a forest service road so may be an issue with a big RV or a low car if it’s been rainy. No reservations.

Surprise: Super cute little town nearby, Helen. Hike or drive to the Holston Mountain Fire Tower!
