This northeastern Ohio region sits at approximately 1200 feet elevation with rolling hills and forests that influence campsite layouts. Many campgrounds feature uneven terrain with sites varying significantly in their slope and flatness.
What to do
Disc golf access: Punderson State Park Campground offers an onsite disc golf course along with other recreational facilities. "Opportunities for disc golf, archery range, canoeing/kayaking/row boats, swimming (no lifeguard) and golf," notes one visitor at Punderson State Park Campground.
Fishing opportunities: Perry Township Park provides direct Lake Erie access with minimal barriers. "There's only a few sites available. The rest are seasonal sites. The campground is adjacent to the small community park and baseball fields. Very well maintained and quiet. As an added bonus it is right next to Lake Erie," reports a camper at Perry Township Park.
Paddling on calm waters: Headwaters Park offers kayaking on smaller, controlled waters. "Various watercraft rentals available, but look at availability before you go if that is included in your plans. Best for relaxation, chill kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, and shorter walks," states a reviewer at Headwaters Park.
What campers like
Lakefront campsites: West Branch State Park Campground features sites directly on the water. "Great site! Shaded lots of space semi private area. Right off the water with area to tie boat for easy water access," shares an enthusiastic visitor to West Branch State Park Campground.
Large, spacious sites: Hidden Lakes Family Campground offers roomier camping spots than many area parks. "We stayed here mid June on their premium lot, super large and right on fishing lake. We brought our canoe and enjoyed fishing and just cruising around. Lots are large and campers purposefully spaced out I presume," notes a camper at Hidden Lakes Family Campground.
Unique tent sites: Punderson State Park Campground features distinctive hillside tent camping spots. "Really cool 'hill' sites that you have to hike up or down 20-100 feet to your wooded site," explains a reviewer. Another camper mentions, "Been here a few times for day trips first time camping will definitively come back... some are basically the parking pad and a fire ring, some are big and flat some are on a incline."
What you should know
Site selection matters: Choosing an appropriate site requires research at West Branch State Park. "On first impression we were not impressed with this park. First the water fill is on an incline so when our tank was 'full' pulling away from fill station it was really only 2/3 full. Also our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches."
Shower facilities vary: Geneva State Park Campground maintains cleaner facilities than some others in the area. "Nice campground within walking distance to Lake Erie. Nice facilities. Quiet and a lot of friendly campers," reports a visitor to Geneva State Park Campground.
Noise levels fluctuate: Nelson-Kennedy Ledges Quarry Park tends to be livelier than other area campgrounds. "To camp here you must camp at the nearby Nelson's Ledges Quarry Park, not the State Park itself. The campground will not be for everyone. There is a large 'Hippie Culture' to the campground, if you are not free spirited and open minded you may be uncomfortable camping here, especially on Festival Weekends."
Tips for camping with families
Farm animal interactions: The Farm at Grand River offers unique animal encounters for children. "My 6 year old daughter lived her farm animal dream life for a week! The hosts were so accommodating. My daughter loved the free movie nights under stars, running wild with the goats, and the play grounds and play houses kept her busy for hours," explains a visitor at The Farm at Grand River.
Kid-friendly amenities: Thompson/Grand River Valley KOA provides organized activities for children. "We had a great time. The staff was wonderful. The kids loved both the pool and the lake. The breakfast pizza was great. The food prices were very reasonable. The wrist band for kid activities is well worth it," notes one camper.
Playground access: Mosquito Lake State Park Campground includes both traditional and nature-based play areas. "Beach was great and there is an epic playground for kids. If your kids are 8 and under they'll love the nature playground and nets provided to catch critters," shares a parent.
Tips from RVers
Leveling challenges: Punderson State Park Campground requires extensive preparation for RVs. "The camp grounds for RV's is not the best. Very few full hookups. Rest of the sites only have 15-20 amp service. The lots are not even close to level. You will need a lot of blocks to get close to level. Saw one RV with auto levelers with his tire about foot off the ground."
Electrical capacity: West Branch State Park limits electrical hookups in certain areas. "No electricity, no hook ups, but a HUGE lakefront site. We're in a self contained RV so it's not a problem for us. Beach is right next door too!"
Site dimensions: Geneva State Park Campground provides better RV access. "This campground is near access to Lake Erie, which was very nice! The campground has nice spots, but they aren't very secluded/private. The campground has bathrooms and showers."
