Within Nezperce National Forest, Elk Summit Lookout provides a US Forest Service campground in the forested terrain outside Elk City. This established site operates at an elevation that requires careful attention to seasonal access conditions.
The campground sits roughly 6 miles from town along forest roads that may challenge low-clearance vehicles during wet conditions. Campers can access nearby alternatives including Oxbow Campsite and Sing Lee Campground, both located within a few miles of this location. The forested setting provides natural windbreaks and shade coverage throughout most sites.
Description
The Elk Summit lookout tower remains intact although not currently used by the Forest Service. It is not accessible by the public. The log cabin at the base of the lookout may be added to the Forest Service cabin rental program in the future. The site is often used by snowmobilers as a rest point.
