Features
Tolowa Dunes, hidden gem, still limited access
This park still has limited access due to construction, renovation, COVID… not sure what exactly is going on here but I’m hopeful that it will reopen soon. Keep an eye on the website (correctly linked here on the Dyrt) so you can pay a visit when it’s available again. In the meantime, here is some info on the campground based on my previous experience and recent exploring:
One of the few equestrian sites I’ve encountered! (The Dyrt is always asking if this campground is equestrian and I didn’t really know what they were talking about until I came here, ha)
Six other walk/hike in sites. Not RV accessible!
The sand dunes are very interesting to read about; learn more about the geological and ecological conditions that contributed to this set of unique ecosystems. You’re right in the middle of them in this campground and should take advantage of it all while you’re here. You have traditional sandy ocean beaches, rocky beaches more typical of the area, both exposed and sheltered sand dunes, woodlands, and marshes.
As you would expect, it is great for wildlife viewing and particularly for watching migrating birds during the right season, who pass both north and southbound through here. The river is a dream for fishing and has long been popular for the camping community; trout is abundant (along with salmon and steelhead).
