Walking the short nature trails that wind through Florence Keller Regional Park is one of the more distinctive ways to spend an afternoon near campgrounds near Crescent City, with second-growth redwoods and Douglas fir forming a dense canopy overhead. The grove sits just off US-101 north of town, and the tree cover is thick enough that solar panels will get almost no usable light. Shade is the constant here.
Campers consistently describe the atmosphere as quiet, particularly after dark, when even the highway noise from 101 fades. During the day, road sounds carry into certain sites, especially those closer to the entrance. The campground has roughly 50 sites spread across two loops, and reviewers recommend driving the full circuit before choosing a spot. The second loop, past the playground, tends to be less crowded and offers a bit more separation from foot traffic. As Laura M. notes, "sites are very clean, fairly level and of varying sizes."
The day-use area includes a playground, horseshoe pits, a grass court, and a large covered picnic area, which draws local visitors throughout the day. Short walking trails pass a small creek and old-growth stumps. There are no showers on-site, but flush toilets are available, along with water spigots distributed through the campground. Firewood is available for purchase from the camp host. Pets are welcome on leash.
RV access requires careful navigation. The internal roads are narrow, paved, and mostly one-way. A 30-foot rig can technically fit, but maneuvering is difficult, and most sites are better suited to rigs under 20 feet. One full-hookup site is available at $30 per night; all others run $20. Mike E. flags a specific GPS issue: Google Maps may direct drivers into the one-way exit off Elk Valley Cross Road. The correct entrance is the next left onto Cunningham Lane. The Crescent City-Redwoods KOA is nearby for campers who need full-service amenities or larger pull-through sites.
