## Overview

 The Green River Campground is located along the banks of the Green River at an elevation of 4,750 feet (1448 m). The highly eroded Split Mountain is visible to the north. The campground is about five miles (8 km) from the famous [Quarry Exhibit Hall,][1] where you can see 149 million year old dinosaur bones still encased in the rock. A short distance from the campground is the Split Mountain Boat Ramp where river rafters come off the Green River after trips through Dinosaur National Monument\'s canyons. 
## Recreation

 Dinosaur National Monument covers over 210,000 acres (84984 ha).\_\_\_\_ [Visitor Centers. ][2] The monument features two visitor centers - one in Colorado and one in Utah.\_\_\_\_ [Quarry Exhibit Hall.][1] You can see over 1,500 dinosaur fossils still in the rock inside the Quarry Exhibit Hall (Jensen, Utah).\_\_\_\_ [History &amp; Culture.][3] Numerous cultural sites reveal stories of the people who lived here before and include Fremont petroglyphs, homestead cabins and former ranches. Boaters continue downstream on the Green River to the take-out at the Split Mountain boat ramp. The Yampa is the largest free-flowing tributary within the Colorado River system. ## Facilities

 Green River Campground has 80 campsites suitable for tents or RVs. Each site has a picnic table and fire pit. Drinking water and flush toilets are available. RVs can not fill their potable water tanks at the campground. There are no showers or water/electrical hook-ups/dump stations for recreational vehicles.\_\_ 
## Natural Features

 The campground is set on a bench along the Green River and is dotted by Fremont cottonwood trees and sagebrush. Many campsites offer views of Split Mountain. Some sites have shade while others are very sunny. 
## Nearby Attractions

 The Quarry Exhibit Hall allows visitors to see approximately 1,500 dinosaur fossils exposed in the rock. Besides the monument, nearby Utah State Parks, the Ashley National Forest, Flaming Gorge National Recreational Area and Bureau of Land Management sites provide additional recreational opportunities.

Green River Campground — Dinosaur National Monument

Campground is within the park. No showers, water  or electricity hook ups. Bathrooms are available. Great views of Split Mtn. Plenty of hiking opportunities.

Dinosaur National 

Hot in the summer but campground has great ranger programs, relatively clean bathrooms, and awesome spots on the Green River. Close to the Dinosaur Quarry (also awesome). Throw a tarp down under your tent... It helps with the dust at this one!

Awesome spots by the river! 

If you want to tour Dinosaur National Monument in summer, it will be HOT! We arrived around 4 pm when the temperature was close to 100 degrees. Here's the (minor) problem with Green River Campground in the Utah portion of the park: there's not much shade.

But you may be able to get a site with some shade. How? Loop B's sites (23-55 among 80 total sites) are reservable between mid-May and mid-September. For a possibility of shade in the late afternoon/early evening, try for 23, 30, 32, 37, 39, 42, 49 or 55\. (Some photos are included.) 30 and 42 are good for a group that needs two sites.

We wanted to stay two nights and considered going the walkup route, but we weren't sure if the walkup sites in loops A and C would fill up. (FYI they didn't fill up on Tues/Wed night.) We reserved a site in loop B for one night because that's all we could get. We planned to get in early and transfer to a walkup site where we could stay for two nights. The host was amenable to that, and she encouraged us to search for a shady site.

The search for shade is a good reason for moving if you have a reserved site with little to no shade. Loop C had some good possibilities among the cottonwoods. So.....reserve a site, get in early and move to a (somewhat) shady site. 

Other than the lack of shade and abundance of heat, the campground was fine. One minor gripe: the bathroom has water and soap but no paper towels or hand dryers.

Looking at fossils: It's not easy to find fossils on the 1.2 mile hike between the Visitor Center and the Quarry Exhibit Hall. After we went out on our own, we realized a ranger-led hike would have been better. Before or after, you will see plenty of dinosaur bones in the Exhibit Hall which is a building that encloses an excavated area.

Hiking: The hike above the Green River between the Green River and Split Mountain (group) campgrounds is beautiful...and hot. There are other hikes listed in a brochure you can get at the entrance or Visitor Center.

Something we didn't know until we arrived: To see the Colorado portion of Dinosaur National Monument, you have to drive back to the town of Dinosaur CO (30 minutes) and enter the park north of there. There's also a campground over there.

An NPS Park, it’s situated on the banks of the Green River. Electricity is available, which can come in handy as the area can get seriously warm in the summer. There are two loops, one which has trees, the other mostly without. Reserve ahead as shade is a commodity.

The Park visitor center is amazing. A preserved 90’ wall of dinosaur bones. It doesn’t get any better.

Step Back in Time

Green River Campground is located inside Dinosaur National Monument - on the ‘Quarry side’ of the park, in Utah. It is a short drive from the vistitors center and quarry, and is next to the Green River.

**BEWARE**: We trusted Siri's directions, and she steered us in the wrong direction - she sent us across the Colorado border and to the ‘Canyon side’ of the park. We saw a sign reading DNM, and passed a visitors center, so we figured we were in the right place - we should have stopped at the visitors center, we may have saved ourselves from getting a little lost. After driving 15 miles or so we came to a stopping point - you needed a 4 wheel drive vehicle to continue down a couple of the roads. There was a sign post with a map, but the Green River Campground was nowhere to be seen. Since we didn’t have 4WD we figured the campground was not accessible through the roads within the park, so we had to backtrack back to highway 40 towards Utah to the Quarry side. Lesson learned - follow the directions on the park's website, NOT SIRI!

If you have an easy-up or some sort of shade canopy, I highly suggest bringing it with you when you are camping in this part of Utah! As stadard for the area, most of the campsites do not have much in the way of shade. We camped this past July, and it was extremely hot for most of the day and well into the evening. There were a couple sparse trees in our site, but they did not provide any shade. We tried to rig up a shade canopy with an extra tarp, but there wasn't much to tie it to, nor did we have much rope.

**Warning**: The area does have black bears, but there were no bear bins in the campground, so you have to lock all of your food and toiletries in the car at night. There are bear-proof dumpsters for trash and recycling though. I was once told by a ranger in Yosemite NP that bears can recognize coolers when peering into car windows - he suggested putting put a towel and gear over your coolers when keeping them in the car overnight in bear territory.

The bathrooms were clean - no showers are available, though.

There were not any water spigets around by the sites, but there was a faucet outside the rest rooms for dish washing and water bottles.

The fire pit had a very nice cooking grate - we always bring a small collapsable grate in case the fire ring doesn’t have one, but no need to use it this time!

It got very **windy** during the day, and after coming back from a hike we found our tent blown over, despite having staked it down. Stake your tents down well!

We only saw one scorpion in our site for the two nights we stayed - one crawled up by the fire ring and hung out with us next to the camp fire. He was small. I would still suggest always zipping up your tent completely every time you open and close it, and to check your shoes if you leave them outside!

Some sites in Green River are "riverside," but are not directly next to the river - perhaps 30 yards away. We walked down to the river - we did not see any true trails to the river, but we didn't take the time to look around. The river and surrounding moutainous region was beautiful, and the cold water was a great way to cool off after a hike in the heat.

I was able to get some cell service down in the campground, but it was definitely better up near the visitors center.

Green River Campground is a great basecamp for those wishing to explore Dinosaur National Monument! Bring lots of water - it is HOT in the summer! We chose to get up early to hike and beat the heat - afterwards we packed up lunch and drove over to Josie Morris cabin. The Josie Morris cabin is an interesting historical site - what one women accomplished out in the middle of nowhere was impressive! Josie planted a lot of trees on her land, so there is a nice shady lawn with picnic benches and a view - it was the perfect lunch spot! The petroglyphs around the park are a must see, as is the quarry exhibit hall!

Green River Campground - Dino Nat’l Monument 

This has become one of my favorite campgrounds. What we have learned is that if you will go online and make a reservation (loop B), you can move your reservation to one of the non-reservable loops (A or C) once you get there. So if you find a site on the river or one with more trees in the outer loops, the camp hosts will let you change your site number. I love this feature as it also helps us to avoid noisy neighbors or shadeless sites. The park in general has lots of interesting, educational, and/or scientific sites. Plenty to stay busy plus the added bonus of having a river to cool off in. We have AT&amp;T and had enough 4G throughout the campground to stream a Broncos game with minimal interruptions.

Great campground

This campground is in the National Monument and is along the gorgeous Green River. It has clean flush toilets (lighted at night), potable water, fire pits, picnic tables and a variety of sites. You can camp a few feet from the river or walk a short distance to it’s sandy, rocky banks. Great place for birding, a short drive to the Park Service Visitor Center which is worth spending at least a few hours at! Take the shuttle to the Quarry for an entire bank exposing dinosaur bones and more. 

Dinosaur National Monument 

We camped in A10 and it is the best spot. It is right by the River Trail which is perfect for a late evening before dinner out and back hike. Amazing views in every direction! #10 is secluded by a bunch of sagebrush and has it's own mini trail to your own private beach! I would definitely recommend!

Right by the river!

Few miles into Dinosaur NP is a large but spacious and very green camp on the Green River. Friendly camp host, nice bathrooms, and potable water. Camp spots are large and flat.

Spent 2 nights at the Green River Campground. Loops A and C are first come, if you need shade take loop B or C. Loop B reservations only. 
All sites are nicely spaced with no designated tent pad. Finding a level spot might be difficult.
Beautiful dark sky area and the stars at night are awesome. At night you can hear the Green River-which is near by.
My T-Mobile service was great and they also have firewood to purchase if you like.
Flush toilets and water. No showers or other amenities.
Remember it’s the desert so bring plenty of water when hiking at near by Dinosaur National Monument, which where the camp is located in.
Nice quiet campground definitely will come back.

Diverse beautiful landscapes. 

It's a nice little Kim spot about 9 miles from the dinosaur national monument visitor center  Utah side. There's a lot of chipmunks and if you have allergies cottonwood trees. Also the ground not to level so for tent camping it's takes a little bit to find a spot to lay your tent. just a few minutes up the road there split mountain which is for group Canton so there's more white out spaces for Tent's but you also sacrifice to tree cover on hot days.

Nice campground but a little cramped for my taste, spaces were pretty close together. Running water &amp; flush toilets but no electricity. It does sit along the banks of the Green River with mountains in the background.

Great spot on the Green River

Was surprised how nice and serene this cg is.  82+ sites and two cg hosts but does not have that constant drive thru of desperate campers.  $18/$9 nite. Flush toilets, water spigots at restrooms, trash dumpsters.  No elect or sewer hookups. Large cottonwood trees for shade in the B and C loops, not so much the A loop except site A#1. Cell was great for TMobile but not much Verizon or ATT signal. Note this area is best spring and fall...once Memorial holiday comes this CG will be too hot.

Great gem of a campground

Unfortunately, this campground doesn't have much for shade, the bathrooms are absolutely DISGUSTING (Was there for 2 days and they were never cleaned)! The area is cool if you are going to be gone all day, hiking, rafting, biking (which btw the temperature today was 100). If you are looking to just chill, this isn't the place. Going down to the river you will not find much relief as it's rocky getting into the river. Would of been nice if there was a beach. This is definitely a fall location, for me a one and done location. Ended our 4 day reservation on the 2nd day!

Sun Dried Camping 

I contacted the campground and was told if I got there by 1pm on Thursday I could probably get a site for the weekend.  So we got there at 1 and had a huge choice of spots.  We stayed in spot 72 which was great!  There was sun in the morning but all afternoon and evening there was shade.  There were large trees and plenty of space for kids and 2 dogs.  We fit a large tent plus a truck tent.  Enjoyed the camp hosts as well. I would not recommend staying in the A's as there was hardly any shade.  We had people battling for our spot when we left on Saturday.

  

Also enjoyed having clean bathrooms with running water! No showers though.

Memorial Weekend 2021

This is an out if the way campground but not many other options in the area so it is busy. Its on the river but cannot really see it from the sites. It is just past the National monument. Camp sites are fairly close and not very private.

Sure, slightly pricey with the park fee and the campsite fee combined, but a stunning site. Just make sure to hang out on the river banks for the sunset. Or sunrise.  
  

First come basis, but in October, I had my pick. Probably only 20% full. This trip was the final weekend it was open for the year. October is a perfect time to be here.   

  

Bathrooms are well lit and have flush toilets. Campground is well kept. Campsites have plenty of room.

Dinosaur Dreams and Timeless Sunsets

We arrived mid-October, when sites are first-come first-served and the fall foliage absolutely beautiful. Only two loops were open and a good number of sites, including all the riverside ones, were taken. We drove around twice before noticing the absolute gem of a spot A10. *Perfect* secluded very slight walk-in tent site amidst otherwise packed together sites clearly designed for RVs. There was maybe a 10 or 15 foot walk to a beautiful clearing. 

Some rain blew in just as the sun was setting, but the skies opened up a bit later and were absolutely stunning. A true dark sky for real stargazing. It was chilly at night and Jack Frost visited, leaving a beautiful glisten for the morning.

We left to do the scenic drive and spot Petroglyphs.  Everything was dried by the warm fall sun by the time we came back around 10am to pack up. We then hit the dinosaur quarry which was SO COOL!

Right next to A10 is the Riverside trail. It's a short walk to a flush toilet with warm water. Always a plus when fall camping!

We spent several days here in our 21' TT exploring Dinosaur National Monument.  No hook ups or dump station.  $18/night - $9 with a National Parks Pass.

This campground has about 20 spots for reserve and about 50 first come first serve.  The middle and sports close to the water have more shade.  The spots near the road have almost none.  The spots near the road are much smaller if you are pitching a tent.  The middle spots are closer together on a good number of them.  Lots of ground squirrels and lizards.  If you go to the beach watch out for the hellgrammites!

Green River Campground is not the caliber of the adjacent Split Rock Group campground on the same road.

  

One look at the weedy mess of my campsite #B 33 in the dust made me think instantly of a possible chigger infection. Not worth it.

We met up with friends and found a couple of good sites mid-October.   Peaceful, good hike to the Split Mountain Campground.  Very nice camp host.

We'd stay again.  No wifi, or cell service except up on top of the mesa near the entrance/visitors center.

Pretty Fall Colors

Accidentally ended up here due to GPS but really liked the campsites and people here.  True that it’s more for tents, but there are pull thrus.  No hookups, but clean bathrooms and only $20 a night.

And right on the Green River within the Dinosaur National Monument.
Someone in a previous review called it ‘tent city’. I didn’t have that experience at all. I totally loved this Campground and would definitely book again. You can run a generator from 7am-9pm, but I heard none of that (except mine for an hour to get my fridge back up and running, lol). Of course we were out exploring most of the day. They do have bathrooms with toilets and water stations. No showers. My son is in a wheelchair and the handicap site was nice and close to the bathroom with a paved walkway: 
Stay here, you won’t be disappointed!

We stayed here on a road trip for one night. Our initial spot we reserved was wide open and not that appealing, but we were able to move spots to a nice spot on the river that was  largely tree covered. The host was kind about the move. Can’t speak to the park itself though I wish we had more time to explore.

The Green River Campground-is located inside Dinosaur National monument.
There is water available in the campground, and flush toilets, but no hook ups and no showers or anywhere to fill water tanks anywhere in the park, no dump stations.
Most sites can be reserved through the government’s website.
There is a boat ramp area nearby for river rafters , and it’s close to the fossil quarry.
